A woman's right to choose
Edited on Sat Nov-06-04 05:39 PM by LiberteToujours
I've never understood why we are afraid to call it for what it is, a woman's right to abortion. If we are going to support it we should not be afraid of it, and whenever I see Hillary (or other politicians, but Hillary especially sticks out in my head for some reason) say "A woman's right to choose..." it comes across very weak-kneed to me. What is she choosing? Why are so afraid of talking about what the woman is choosing if we support it so strongly?

It comes across that we are afraid to finish the sentence. If abortion is too ugly a word, we can use another, but at least let it be a noun.

1. Your looking for a fight aren't you?
It's a womans choice, plain & simple nothing more nothing less.

Why go all technical to explain something so easy?

5. Not really
It's just one of those things that makes my eyes roll. I very much support a woman's right to abortion. If abortion is too ugly of a word, we can choose something else, but just leaving it at "choose" has always seemed to me like we're afraid to finish the sentence. We need a noun instead of a verb.

2. You are right...
I prefer to say "a woman's right to choose because it's her body". If she chooses to have an abortion then that is her business. Abortion should not be a political issue but a private one. Bush and his party used it to gain power and it worked....

3. Because that's what it is.
We support a woman's right to choice. That's what I support - CHOICE, not abortion. Saying we support "the right to abortion" is true and I see your point, but that is just once possible choice for a pregnant woman. We support the right to choose abortion, adoption, or raising the child yourself. Therefore, we support choice. It's like saying we're "pro-abortion". We're not. We think everyone should be able to make a CHOICE, whether it be abortion, adoption, or raising the child yourself.

4. It's "a woman's sovereignty over her own body"
Edited on Sat Nov-06-04 05:31 PM by BlueEyedSon
and you know sovereignty is sovereign... like... uh... sovereignty.

Maybe Bush will understand it put that way!

10. Women are property.
Their reproductive organs belong to MANLY MEN! Give them control over reproduction, and men will have to <GASP> treat them as superiors! "Be fruitful and multiply!" "Barefoot and pregnant." "Foot-binding." "Bhurkas." "Women must submit to their husband's will." Notice a theme? The Taliban and Talli-Born-Again are singing the same song. Its all about the enslavemnet of women, nothing more or less!

6. I'd like for the Democrats to find middle-ground on abortion,
instead of just trying different language.

7. I think we do have middle ground
We are against late-term abortion EXCEPT when the mother's life is in danger. I think most Americans can get behind us on that. I think message IS what we're lacking, not content.

9. Sing it brother!!
You are 100% correct for portraying our liberal positions as being something that most Americans can get behind. These are NOT liberal values; They're human values.

15. Kerry should have said that more, then,
instead of saying he thinks life starts at conception but doesn't want to impose his faith.

17. I agree
But I don't think he had the time to come out strong on this issue. We have been letting Republicans frame the debate on this one the last few years. We need to take back the language and the message so that our next candidate can be more vocal.

18. What would you propose... I'm really curious, since there can be no middle
ground... Is your idea of middle ground paying for the woman's healthcare through delivery and then adopting the baby out? Is your idea of middle ground saying "let the states decide" (like the idiotic middle ground of politicians re. gay marriage)? Is your idea of middle ground only allowing abortion in cases of rape or if the woman's life is in danger? Really, what is your idea of middle ground?

12. Saying that one supports choice but does not support abortion
makes me cringe.

Does not make sense to me at all. If a woman has an abortion those who support choice then the conclusion is that they don't support her choice so really do not support choice.

13. Actually, it's the woman's (or girl's)
right to control her own body and reproductive health - or just plain health, including emotional.

Unlike homosexuality, it IS a "choice" whether a pregnancy compromises her total health.

That's why I prefer "pro-choice" or "anti-choice" as the terms to use. "Pro Life just doesn't cut it, because it does not consider the life of the woman.

14. Sorry but ...
in a Theocracy, the Fetus Delivery System, or FDS(womb) belongs to the God/State.

Biblically, women have no Souls and are merely intended for the act of birth. They are to be "owned" and exist generally as the equivalent to cattle. Children are also possessions.

The Patriarchal deal is the ultimate Machismo. Check into the Promise Keepers.

I guess it's ok to abort if the baby is a girl then? :P
