1. Freedom Fighters
Insurgents are rebels against estalished authority. These people are trying to fight for their country, IMHO.

I wish they weren't killing people like my cousin and my friends from high school over there, but that's shrub's fault.

2. My view on this

Let me first say that I don't agree with some of their methods. The beheaders that we call "terrorists" are just insurgents.. and I believe they are trying to scare people out of their country. The beheaders are cold-blooded people for sure. But I don't think they're terrorists as our media keeps calling them.

As far as the other insurgents who are just out their defending themselves, I feel sorry for them. The US has trampled into their country with bad intentions. I think they're just defending their families and their home country. Freedom fighters, for sure.

Insurgents resisting foreign occupation = freedom fighters, at least in the sense of freedom to determine their own destiny.

Ever traveled in Mexico much? It's hard to go far without being reminded that insurgencies against repression are a good thing, i.e. Ciudad Insurgentes, Callo des Insurgentes, etc.

5. An insurgent is one who fights an established authority -
The authority of the Iraqi governing council is based officially on disputed UN actions, but in reality on US military force (primarily cowards dropping bombs from a safe distance). It would probably be a mistake to call them freedom fighters as well, since they weren't free before and probably won't have freedom as we think of it. How about calling them Iraqis? This has already become a civil war.
