Canada, New Zealand, or Mexico
Many Americans realize that Bush has not only killed the American dream but that he also wishes to establish an American theocracy endorsed by Falwell and Robertson. He has stolen our country and the very principles upon which it was based.

My family has looked into moving to Mexico. We have enough asets to exist comfortably. Maybe we can help Mexico demand fair trade agreements and proper appreciation and distribution of its oil.

4. Like many, We wish to move on to freedom or the hope of. freedom.
Bush wants subjects only. He was appropriately named. Mexico offers a nicer climate and we think we can offer a little help in that country. It's such a strange concept to think we must move on out of our native country but I think we are preparing to do so. The American Indians did not move on and look what happenned to them. I expect by mid year 2005, we will be gone.

2. If you want to get away from religious nutcases, New Zealand is the place
Less than 10% of the population believe in God. It truly is a secular heaven...

3. Do your research first -- lots of resources online
There are many expat communities. Do a google on American Expats and Americans Living Abroad. There are lots of Online resources. It is really a good idea to find out how others from the "states" have managed to live in other countries.

The possibilities are many -- New Zealand was mentioned in an earlier thread and I've talked to many people who have lived in NZ, plan to return or who are from NZ. This country has real possibilities.

There are Caribbean nations -- and if you have an income you can live in some of these places very reasonably. You only need to leave every 6 months for a day or more and then re-enter the country. Check out the requirements for buying property or renting or leasing. Generally former British Colonies or islands that are still colonies are a better bet -- according to many of the advice from expats living abroad.

There are a few countries in Europe that might welcome well educated liberal/progressive Americans -- again it depends on what language you speak.

Obviously a whole lot of Americans have adapted to living abroad -- I was amazed at the potential voting pool of expat Americans for this past election.

My husband and I will be moving abroad -- this was planned long before this election -- actually while Nixon, the Raygun and bush the elder were in office. I have been predicting that if the GOP could elect bastards like the above they were sure to find someone much worse.

I know many people who have sailed all over the world -- some have young families. If you have an income -- it doesn't have to be a huge income and you love to sail -- then the cruising lifestyle is a way away from the US craziness. This is one option we are looking into when we retire -- soon. Lots of companies have early retirement plans -- which might not be enough to live on in most places in the states -- but it might be enough for some foreign countries.

Do some research -- the Internet (thanks to President Gore) has an abundant amount of information -- rules, regulations, customs, costs, and contacts.

5. Mexico
is where we are planning on going too. I live in CA so Mexico is close and can return here for visits. Still have much research to do but are really feeling Mexico is the place for us. We have been talking about this way before the election and decided we wanted to leave here even if Kerry had won. Since Kerry lost though there is more reason to not drag out feet about it. It's not just the political situation that makes us want to leave it is much more than that, it is not being happy here any longer, the 'values' that people have here really stink, plus just some personal reasons too to leave.

6. We had planned such well before the election.
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 04:40 AM by cyclezealot
We have a for sale sign in front of our home now..Even before the election..We have planned this for years....Not just tired of living in a country addicted to empire, living in fear of the red/orange postings from Tom Ridge...Tired of unreliable medical care.Tired of religious nuts as neighbors..
We have been to Europe 17 times in the last twenty years..We are headed for the South of France...ROusillon, to be precise...Housing about 1/3 of California, health care affordable. The small villages a wine bar/ afternoon of cycling and Petanque...Ornate cement bridges across lazy rivers..Sun almost like California's....
And we can be real Socialists...Being Socialist there means like being a union member in the 50's...Commardarie...Picnics..
No one will convince me the First Amendment is strongest in the US...You have not traveled..The exchange of ideas/political discourse is far more common in the media/wine bars/ than American's can ever visualize...We look forward to our future..And praise god.We will get away from the USA Second Amendment- very much in keeping with MY values....
For us it is only 50% Bush..We like the rural European life style and have for years..It was good enough for the Impressionist painters/it is good enough for us..We knew another Bush would come along...
Europeans..Can you imagine how they would react to a stolen election..They would shut the country down...Now, imagine an attack on social security/medical systems..No government is powerful enough to block an enraged people.
Another factor..When we have European visitors..They see our cities after dark..They ask have we had a war.Where are the people ?
No community here. Hiding in their homes watchin O'Reilly or in our stupid empty malls..
No, we do not intend to drop our US citizenship, unless we have to..But ,we would like to have dual French /US citizenship..
One concern we have is how screwed up Dubya will allow the value of dollars to Euros to get.
wish us a Bon Voyage as of August , 2005.

8. You are so correct...
...I had never actually experienced true freedom before, until I went to Europe. Its hard to explain it to someone who hasn't been, simply because they haven't been exposed to it over here. My wife has 5 years until retirement, and like you, we've been planning our move for a long time. We will happily go, and never look back. You get to a point, where you just want to be with like minded people, in a system and environment, you can agree with.

11. The reasons we choose Southern France.
Edited on Sun Nov-07-04 08:18 AM by cyclezealot
Love the countryside. We have seen 46 states..We have no kids..Have my mom( expect her to live in our larger home we can purchase with lower costs- part of the year,)& my wifes' parents gone...She has had it with American schools.Teacher...Tired of our society with its' anxieties, and need for Prozaic...
Europe has a real sense of community...American's feel no need to even know who their neighbors are...In many communities at least.
We are a dysfunctional society with dysfunctional people.Probably why we have no need for a sense of community..Hence our politics of all for me and screw everybody.. We have had it.
We will live where events occur daily in the parks.Real community based events..Political discussion is open and most people don't get all bent out of shape. And the media is definitely adhering to a fainress doctrine..
Finally, we have no need to think we have to live close to travel here often...it is there where we are concerned about being close to.
So much to see....Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary.etc..
We have not seen Alaska, let the survivilists have it. They need their pot for when they go out and kill someone...I'll take the Norwegian fiords..Thank you..
Further our activism in the French Socialist party..We will lobby for a European response to Bush by forming a all Europe foreign policy to stop Bush from colonizing the world , let alone Mars and the Moon...
