Religion and child abuse
Here is a site worth checking out.
When I see abusive parents fighting to stop abortion I ask myself,I pity the kids that they are not aborted ...if they are born to live in a house dominated by corporal punsihment loving, conduct disordered, fundie, authoritarian parents. There is danger in the NAZI child rearing style promoted by the Bush administration to create obedient populations in the future that will not dissent.
When I look at the passivity of certain people, the unwillingness to defy authority.. I see in America allot of adult abused children looking to please a cruel daddy.. because they are afraid to disobey an authority figure. They obey the impulses in thier emotions from abuse long ago that today they deny was abuse..Alot of the issues in our culture is and always has been about a bully problem .

Until humanity chooses NOT to bully kids women or others or becomes intolerant twords behaviors people choose that are abusive,we will always be in danger of mass authoritarianism ,insane wars.Vunerable to this sickness in our culture that abuses humanity and the planet going through cycles of better and worse.

God or religion is not an excuse for beating a child,In fact there is NO excusers for beating a child-none..If the bible advocates child abuse and people like James Dobson think it does..Than it is an EVIL wicked immoral text.I am a moral absolutist,NO TORTURE.Torture is evil it is wrong.I don't care wghat anyone or any holy texts say torture ands abuse is wrong.

If American kids lead an Abu Gharib life in thier schools homes ect, abuses suffered by children and beaten adults across America This bullying and abuse unchecked at home really does make for Abu Gharib in Iraq.Authorities that abuse create the rationalizations to excuse torture and the culture that accepts it rationalizes it too...Be it taliban beating kids or evangelicals beating kids ,or authoritarians beating people to make them submit to the king..To abuse is a chosen behavior and it is truly evil and destructive to all cultures and people.

1. Thanks for the links
I'm an anti-spanker myself. I even told my in-laws I'd have them arrested if they ever hit one of my kids - this was after MIL relayed a story of hitting one of her other grandkids.

I am constantly amazed at the back flips people will do to justify hitting a kid.

2. This is a very good compilation thread, thanks very much.
Your correlation between facsist-style parenting and the resultant political myopia of the masses gets the bullseye.

I've had some experience of therapy at the London-based Medical Foundation for Victims of Torture where much time and patience is taken to unravel lifetimes of abuse in people of all ages, races and political persuasions.

My overall impression is that male-God religions only survive through brainwashing, intimidation and physical abuse.

Am bookmarking this thread and your source references. Great work! Thanks again.

3. Baby Wise
A few years ago when a lot of people I knew were having kids, I was disturbed to find pefectly reasonable people (or seemingly reasonable people) embrace a book called Baby Wise, which was written by a fundy couple and basically advocated a very harsh attitude towards infants - they need to be "broken" and forced into feeding schedules, they are here to fit into their parents schedules not vice versa, physcial punishmen is ok, even for a child under the age of 1.

There were 2 verisons of the book - one for "mainstream" and one for fundamentalist Christians. Very scarey stuff. There were even reports of children being taken the emergency room for dehydration b/c their parents would not deviate from the feeding schedule described in the book.

The authors now have books for older children - "Toddler Wise" is the next in the series.

8. I remember this, it said that good Christian parents should start
smacking their babies from 9 months of age, and that a smack is like a kiss...........

5. Get a load of this mess.
There is a Pentecostal sect in Southwest Missouri that has what I would term a rather alarming, bizarre and unique practice. It seems the daughters have their first sex act with their father about the age of 13.

How is that for Christian values?

I also understand they are strong supporters of Republican causes.

6. The ADHD scandal
The use of physical abuse and punishment is an old technique dating back centuries. The intent of brainwashing is something that came about in certain cultures. Others use it to reinforce certain ideas. This, however, is not the most sinister part of the modern fundamentalist movement.

If you happen to tune in to any given fundy media source, you will find several things. First, the idea of absolute control by God (no questions allowed). Second, some business news thrown in as an attempt to widen its listener base. But third, and on a regular basis, there is this presentation of an ADHD, or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. They complain bitterly about how children of today seem to have an epidemic of this affliction. They try to present different ways of dealing with it. A lot of medication was prescribed back in the day, and now alternatives to using mood altering drugs is becoming popular. If you think about this, what are they really saying? Children that don't just sit there have a mental disability? I seriously wonder how far this shit will all go before ti collapses in on itself. This is as far out as the U.S.S.R. and its mass brainwashing campaigns. Its just amazing how our population has become so unable to deal with these problems and recognize good parenting.

9. Every single thing about fundamentalism is CONTROL..
control of women via their reproduction and personal habits
control of children through physical means..
control of OTHER people, by demonization/and or force/intimidation

I see very little actual religion going on with these people..It's about control
