9. We need to stop being so idealistic.
I saw this problem with two of the local Parish democratic parties.

They balked at me because I label myself a "fiscal conservative" even though I made sure they THEY knew that what the Republicans call fiscal conservatism (i.e. throwing money at big corporations and ignoring the little guys) is just fiscal irresponsibility and pandering.

But they did not endorse me and they endorsed another candidate because of it. I thought this was silly, because in the first district of Louisiana the ONLY way a candidate with a "D" behind his name would be elected is to either

A) Move a whole bunch of liberals into the district to a point where they could just gerrymander them into the 2nd district.

B) Elect someone that the conservative voters in our district can at least find a common ground with.

There is nothing wrong with reaching for the ideal, but we have to do so with our feet firmly planted in reality.

So what we have to do is take an issue away from the Republicans and make it ours. The National Sales Tax comes to mind. As long as we don’t tax the necessities it is not regressive. And on of the non-necessities would be foreign labor for products/services here in America (i.e. outsourcing).

So whom do I suggest that we nominate? I really don’t know. It doesn’t have to be a Southern Democrat, but it didn’t hurt the last time (i.e. Clinton).
But we need to have someone that can attract the moderately conservative voter so that we can have some success in 08. If we keep going too far to the left, we are just handing the country over to the extremist right.

27. I third. Our slogan "Re-elect John Kerry"
Most of my buttons don't have a date, I notice. Hee hee.

Meanwhile "John Kerry for Minority Leader!"

I'm afraid I feel about Hillary the way I started out with John, that is, totally unenthusiastic. Not that the attitude couldn't change, mind you. It sure did with John. But right now I'm totally uninspired by a Hillary run.

If John doesn't run next time, I think I would probably support another Wes candidacy. Would be kind of cool if the Candidate Coalition reformed and backed whoever it was again. I enjoyed watching them all work together. Quite cool.

Other wise run a deeprooted liberal like Kucinich or Sharpton.

It's time to cut our losses and prove to America that we actually stand for something. Start defining things on our terms, not on theirs (read 'Dont think of an elephant')

19. I would agree, but...
people have already suggested Kerry, Gore, Dean and a plethora have chosen Clark. I like those guys and what they've done for the party - but they are more of the same, a.k.a. losing.

like I said it's time to take a stance on the issues, we need a new, smart, liberal face on the party - Obama has the potential, Kucinich has the ideals, that's why I like them.

23. I would get behind any of them

So I didn't vote any preference.

My only preference is: not Hillary, because we'd lose for certain.

Best might be to put a popular governor at the top of the ticket, and a popular senator in the VP slot. Also split the ticket geographically; for example: Mark Warner (VA) for President, Byron Dorgan (ND) for VP.

I think it's more likely that a governor from a certain state will help us win, than a senator from that state.

Wesley Clark would be great as a VP nominee no matter who winds up at the top. But I don't think he'd be as good at the top of the ticket.

Here's a complete list of Democratic governors:
http://www.democraticgovernors.org/governors/index.html

Some ideas come to mind from that list that might really help us take some difficult states:
Bob Holden (Missouri)
Joe Kernan (Indiana)
Bill Richardson (New Mexico)
Tom Vilsack (Iowa)
Mark Warner (Virginia)
others? - we have Dem governors right now in such unlikely states as Oklahoma, Wyoming, Kansas, Arizona, Tennessee, Louisiana, and North Carolina.
