Why is there no MSM discussion of the young man who killed
Edited on Mon Nov-08-04 06:05 AM by saracat
himself at Ground Zero in protest of Bush's assumption? I thought it was interesting that the out of stater's were shocked that someone would do such a thing on "sacred ground" and the New Yorkers understood it. Reminds me of RW concern for the oval office and that it not be besmirched. These fundies are weird about places aren't they, but they don't give a damn about people. Sort of like save the church, let the congregation burn! I wonder if the Kerry Campaign will address this issue and if there are any more such instances? With the vast depression we are all feeling, I wouldn't be surprised!

Here is a thread with 82 posts. This was posted Sat. night, so possibly some didn't see it. And as an aside, lots of people are interested since I've locked about 5 or 6 duplicates over the last two days.

7. This poor fellow didn't follow tradition...
If he had been a Freeper, he would have shot twenty school children or other innocent people before dying in a hail of bullets.

8. The media does not
and should not give coverage to suicide. I'm saying this from having had decades of experience in psychiatric social work. There are many people who deal with heavy burdens in life, that result in their having feelings of wanting to "end it." Often, these feelings go in cycles; for other people, it can be a near constant, following them like a shadow. There is no question that reports in the media, including both local and national news, acts as a trigger. It can have a devastating effect on a person who is at a vulnerable point in time.

Bush being "elected" is depressing. But it is not worth having one person die for. One of the reasons many of us fought as hard as we did is because Bush is not worth dying for. I know that this election has been a heavy burden for many people, but we will survive this. And if people feel more depressed than usual, talk about it, don't hold it in. Talk. Do those things that help keep you safe. Accept assistance. There is help. And there is hope. Change is in the air.

9. I think the fact that this election is so heinous that it
drove someone to take their life when we are fighting to save lives by opposing war and the death penalty is news. It is just as much news as the soldiers dying in Iraq. He is but another casualty. And suicide does get regulsr coverage. We have been subjected to reams on teenage suicide, and gunman suicide. I find it ironic that a suicide with a message is the only one not covered.
I find your "feelings go in cycles speech " somewhat insulting. It implies a denigration of the feelings of not only that individual, but of all of us who may be hurt by this election. It implies that our feelings are not to be taken seriously as we will "get over it' once the cycle is over.
You say "Bush being "elected" is depressing. But it is not worth having one person die for. One of the reasons many of us fought as hard as we did is because Bush is not worth dying for" I don't sanction this young man's suicide, but I wonder if you think anything is worth dying for? I think we should be willing to give up our lives to preserve democracy in this nation. It would appear that if you were to council the rebels in the colonies you would have told them to "ride out the cycle and George the Third wasn't worth dying for."!

10. You are entitled to your opinion.
But your logic is faulty. If you are comparing this poor person's suicide to the Founding Fathers, and you believe that is a good comparison, there's nothing I need say to you.

11. I didn't compare his suicide to the Founding Fathers!
I compared your advice about George Bush not being worth dying for, as against the same advice you might have given to the rebels telling them to chill out about George the third. The young man's suicide was a tragedy. It accomplished nothing. It was a senseless death. But you seem to think that our civil liberties are not worth defending. I am only saying that we are in a "give me liberty or give me death situation" And many people don't think it is worth fighting for.

12. You are very far off target.
Very far indeed. If anyone in my family were to be called to fight in Iraq, I would tell them that George Bush isn't worth dying for. If anyone in my family were to question why it is important to be politically active, I'd tell them that its because this country is worth fighting for. If a person can't distinguish between George Bush and the United States, that would be their problem.

13. I agree with that. George Bush is not the United States
But ridding the country of him, would be worth fighting for. I am only pointing out that our forefathers died to give bith to our democracy and that few people would fight to preserve that democracy by standing up for the vote and fighting to preserve our freedom. This is not about Iraq. I don't give a fig about Iraq and I would never fight or have any child of mine fight that war. But we are not fighting to preserve our rights at home. And who are you quoting with "you are very far off target" ? Whomever said it, I am NOT very far off target. There seems to be a comphrehension problem here.
