5. Christ! Perhaps women will carry the election next time....
Cause we are under attack... a brutal, horrid attack!!!

In April, Julee Lacey, 33, a Fort Worth, TX, mother of two, went to her local CVS drugstore for a last-minute Pill refill. She had been getting her prescription filled there for a year, so she was astonished when the pharmacist told her, "I personally don't believe in birth control and therefore I'm not going to fill your prescription." Lacey, an elementary school teacher, was shocked. "The pharmacist had no idea why I was even taking the Pill. I might have needed it for a medical condition."

It ain't gonna happen. We always have the nutcases. If a pharmacist refuses to refill your BC pills, wage a campaign for them to be disallowed from selling Viagra. Make it very vocal in your community.

If old men can't screw for the pleasure of it, maybe they'll think twice about denying women our pleasure, too.

Every sperm is wanted,

Every sperm is needed

But God loves those who treat their

You're under the assumption that they care about political backlash; that they're interested in upholding the actual will of the people. They are on a crusade to bring us back to the Dark Ages, so please don't fool yourself into thinking they're interested in maintaining a healthy Democracy where our complaints will be addressed.

Let's put it this way: we'll be lucky - I mean profoundly lucky - to see an actual election in 2008. And the odds are infinitesimal that, even if it does happen, it won't be rigged in favor of the next faux-dictator in waiting, ready to pursue an anti-humanistic, pro-corporate agenda.

74. Amazing how the MALES are so willing to give up WOMEN;s
control of their own bodies?

Don't you males get IT? Women are going to start dying again -- that's what happens when they can't get birth control -- women get desperate, and some can't afford a trip to Mexico or where ever the abortion capital outside of the US turns out to be. So capitalism fills the vacuum and viola back street abortionists. Women start dying or showing up at ER rooms.

I had a woman MD tell me about those times -- a woman had an illegal abortion -- the patient was very religious and the laws at the time required the permission of the husband for a procedure to save her. The husband would not sign the form and the woman bled to death. This didn't happen in the US-- but the laws were similar in some states, according to my MD friend.

I believe that the statistics for women dying from back street abortions equaled men dying in Vietnam during the same time frame.

75. Hmm?
What I was trying to get at is the fact that we are in the process of being stripped, kicking and screaming, of some very basic human rights. That is the reality of the next four years, unless a miracle occurs, and these criminals are swept from office.

This administration has acted against the pleas of Americans for the last four years; now Bush is under the impression that he has a mandate, not only from the American people, but from God. Our struggle is much more profound, and, while I am incensed at this administration's reckless disregard for women's rights, the specific birth-control issue is merely the tip of the iceberg.

77. I was supporting your earlier post -- Sorry I confused you.
where you responded to gordianot and that damned jumping frog -- I am assuming that gordianot is male -- since every poster who seems to be pleased at the prospect of controlling womens' reproductive right seems to be male.

This was a hard fought victory for women -- and with the way bush has been determined to appoint anti-choice Judges -- if the Supremes over rule Roe v Wade -- it will be a very long hard fight to get women's right in a whole lot of areas restored. Because much more is at stake than just women's right to choose. The fundies want to control women's bodies and women who do not conform to the fundie's rules will probably end up in jail or worse.

And when I refer to the mandate -- I call it a MAN DATE <grin>.

Bushie has established that he is at WAR with women from his first day in office when he restored the gag rule. I believe I have seen estimates of the number of women who have died as the result of the US pulling family planning aid from any country that has abortion -- even if the woman pays for the abortion with her OWN money. (heard on AAR today)

I am old enough to remember the days when women had to go into hiding because they became pregnant -- this happened to one of the class officers in high school and another girl was raped, got pregnant and had to leave and go into hiding. This was a horrible time for women.

78. My Apologies
Edited on Wed Nov-10-04 06:21 AM by MagicalSpork
I didn't know whether you were responding to my post or another's.

Anyhow, thank you for the clarification; I'm much too young to have experienced the travail that both men and women suffered through at the hands of a government guided more by politics than by ethics.

I admit it: like many Americans my age, I'm spoiled. This is my first experience with feeling utter desperation in the shadow of a repressive force much larger than myself - I have an inkling that many Americans will take reality like a slap to the face once they fully understand the motives behind the actions of this administration. Growing up, I could not fathom an America where freedoms would be lost; the rights of women, reduced; blacks denied the ability to vote; citizens suppressed and jailed for their disapproval of the above.

The first week of Bush's second coming, and it's already looking like the last four years will seem like a walk in the park in comparison.

21. I've thought about this, and I can't believe it'll happen.
Let's see who the republicans are beholden to:

Fundies:$$
Pharmaceutical companies:$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Birth control pills, and various forms of female contraception, generate billions of dollars every year. The repubs like their values, but they like the buck even more.

Furthermore, many woman, like a close friend of mine, don't use the pill for contraception, but to regulate and moderate their periods; it serves a medicinal purpose. The repubs, in playing to their fundy base, risk alienating millions of women.

Also, being a male who has a girlfriend on birth control...well let's just say there are a lot of men unwilling to knock up their partners or get a vasectomy.

But then again, knowing this bunch....

In Africa, for instance.. the logic "could" be...

no family planning...

girls of 12 start having baby after baby (most of which will be ill and probably die)..Mother will die young..lotst of misery, but fewer people in the end

family planning....

girls will postpone their child bearing or at least regulate it.. Perhaps 3 or 4 healthy children will result, and the population goes UP...

29. I'm one of the statistics
I went to my regular OB-GYN appointment only to discover that my regular doc was out of the office, dealing with an emergency. I was asked if I would see another in the practice. I agreed and was taken back.

I was sitting on the table in my paper dress after all the lab work was done. The doctor got up to leave so I reminded him that I would also be needing a refill on my birth control prescription. He flipped through my file and then told me he could not do so based on religious grounds. Upon replacing my lower jaw, I explained that I was a married woman. He said my marital status had nothing to do with it. He felt my birth control was an abortifant and, therefore, would not be a party to prescribing it.

Chaos ensued and I ended up leaving the office with a 3-month refill of my prescription (written by a PA who heard me yelling -- yes, I was yelling) and a re-scheduled appointment for later with my regular OB.

I've since written letters to my OB, the practice as a whole, and others. I'm moving my care from that office to my primary physician (we have no intention of having further children anyway).

BTW, for those who didn't know: Birth control pills have been on the republican agenda since at least 1992. We're now seeing the fruits of over 10 years of work by the religious right.

57. I also got into a debate over this on a parenting site
And it was like talking to my 3-year-old after awhile. I could not get anyone to see that it was out of the pharmacist's job description to refuse to fill a legal drug, legally prescribed by a licensed physician. It was the old, "But the pharmacist is committing a sin and he has to think of his soul first..." Then the pharmacist needs to find another line of work if he can't do his duty in the job he has been hired to do.

But I really didn't expect a blinding flash of revelation from these people. They also saw no problem with letting a 9-year-old, a rape victim, continue with her pregnancy.

After that argument, I threw up my hands and wished them well in the Land of the Ignorant.

41. State-controlled reproduction
Edited on Tue Nov-09-04 10:47 AM by TahitiNut
I've said this since Roe v. Wade. When the USSC planted the hob-nailed boot of the State firmly within the womb by sanctioning 3rd-trimester State prohibitions on abortion, I said that was the first step, at the Federal level, towards establishing jurisdiction over reproduction.

A government with the power to prohibit an abortion under state-specified conditions has the power to require abortions. When human reproduction is not totally within the sovereign authority of the People, the Fascist camel has his nose in the tent of liberty.

Eugenics anyone? :eyes:

39. No amount of logic or reasoning will stop them
They get away with defining a fetus as a "life" or as "life". It is wrong language, but many have bought it.

They know also, that the pill can be used like the morning after pill if a double or triple dose is taken the next day.

Bet they have no trouble handing out viagra though.

I don't really think this will be a big movement all over the country, but that even one woman and her ability to control her family is affected by this, is wrong where professionals are concerned.

Catholic hospitals also discriminate against women whose reproductive life and the way she manages that is not according to their religion.

It just drives me crazy how these right-sided wing-nuts are allowed to push their agenda on any and all.

They care oh so much more for the unborn, but don't give a tinkers damn for the women. Where are they after the child is born? Do they adopt these children? Hell no!!! Just gotta make sure they aren't killed in the womb...can't have that.

Of course it's perfectly fine to let them die of starvation, disease or abuse.

God forgive me, but I despise these people. They have no humanity, no love of people. They only love their so called "Righteous Agenda."

Well what's next...reinstituting the Inquisition.

45. We should force them to logical end points of their positions
We should push for making birth control pills illegal (there's a word that I can't spell re: causing abortion by preventing implantation) and in vitro fertilization and a constitutional amendment to ban divorce. We should push them into the contradictions of their positions and thus make them put up or shut up to the country. Wedge issues so extreme the country will repudiate them b/c it won't sit still to lose what tens of millions of people take for granted. We fear their going to the right but we can control whether we push them to the extremes (with the certainty of a backlash) or let them nibble away at this stuff until close to the extreme becomes acceptable and then the extreme is not protested.

46. They used gay marriage against us
Let's use their positions (the logical endpoints) against them. See gay marriage is the logical endpoint of full citizenship/civil rights for gays and lesbians, but they pushed the endpoint into this election long before the country was ready for it. I saw this happening in the response to the Lawrence case.

Fundies have been pushing the "every sperm is sacred" agenda since the 1960s.

52. ha! and what if these freaks decide that cancer drugs
or AIDS drugs don't mesh with their moral philosophy?

The store needs to be boycotted, and we need to start a "website of shame" for those pharmacists and doctors who refuse to heed the hyppocratic oath.

54. Vasectomies next?
Edited on Tue Nov-09-04 11:43 AM by AngryOldDem
Pharmacists butting into others' private business and foisting their particular beliefs on customers is nothing new. This has been going on for awhile. My solution: Fire their asses. Then they can open up a pharmacy of their own in one of the closed up businesses that are on every street corner and they can decide what prescription to fill, when, and how at their own leisure. People like us who want to exchange cash for a drug that our doctors have legally prescribed can then know where to shop without being hassled.

My fear is, though, at some point could these zealots target vasectomies in the same way they are going after abortion? Is it really much of a stretch to think those could be next on the "pro-life" hit list after abortion and the Pill?

55. This article is a Rove plant
as I posted in the duplicate thread in LBN, something very similar is on yahoo news. It's an inflammatory article, with very little--if any--physician oversight, written to distract us from what the repukes are really doing. If everybody over-reacts to this, they'll push through some other abortion shit and then say, well we didn't take away your pill.

59. A Rove Plant in Prevention Magazine?
I don't think so, especially since one blogger above said the SAME THING happened to her.

This is all part of their agenda.

62. It's happening, but this article showed up in Prevention, USA Today
and Yahoo, and other places for all I know, all at the same time. It's not a coincidence. Why wouldn't he be able to get his way with Prevention, as well as every other media outlet?

63. Isn't that how news percolates?
Someone breaks an interesting story, and others jump no it. I'm not saying that Rove doesn't control the media. I know he does, but this story seems to be too real (in fact one DUer above had the same experience).

from implanting. Of course, their answer to that would probably be no sex during pregnancy.

60. At the pharmacy: Here's what you do.
If the pharmacist refuses to give birth control pills, and you are the woman s(he) is refusing, or you are in line witnessing this...

- ask the pharmacist for his name
- go get one of those disposable cameras and take a few pics of him, then buy the camera while you are there
- call the local newspaper, or any other org you can think of
- try to get the guy's pic in the paper or on a website

what else?

66. The bottom line is this...
It is nobody else's business WHY someone has been given a particular prescription. If a pharmacist has a problem with a legal, cash transaction, that's OK...there are plenty others who will be happy to get your business.

73. Conscience clauses
They are choosing to exercise them. Some will and some won't. But still, it's a violation IMO of the Hippocratic oath for a physician to refuse. They pledge an oath not to do harm, and lots of pregnancies cause harm or even death.
