I HATE Michael Moore
This is for all of those people saying "I love Michael Moore" - MM does a tremendous discredit to democrats everywhere.

He fires up the opposition to no end and gives them endless fuel for their positions. People knew what he was all about after Bowling for Columbine and set himself up for disaster with F911. All of my repub "friends" had a hay day tearing it apart.

Now when MM says something, half the freekin country immediately assume it's a lie or a gross exaggeration REGARDLESS of the truth of his statement. When legitimate democrat leaders stand up and say the same thing, they are completely overshadowed by Moore.

There are very few liberals or dems who came out ahead this election and MM is one of the rich ones. He profits from our ideology after he trashes it completely.

When will this party wake up and abandon this idiot? He may TRY to do us good, but he is turning many in the mainstream off to the dem party completely. I don't the democratic party to be refered to as the "Michael Moore Wacko" group!

I'm sorry if this offends some of you, but this is how I feel. If I'm wrong, then I'm willing to listen, but I don't think I am.

Edited on Tue Nov-09-04 12:32 AM by themartyred
and if so, how can you NOT see the tons of footage of James R. Bath, the Bin Laden FAMILY, all the other clips and then Bush being a complete MORON at the end, and not walk away and think, "this administration went into Iraq for no reason"

if the shoe was on the other foot

REPUBS would have been SCREAMING Gore should have been impeached
that job losses were the worst in 70 years
that he was destroying American power in the world of influence
and that he was IGNORING finding the murderer of nearly 3000 people in the WTC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

64. And your answer for 2008 is to run with Lieberman/McCain?
We don't need to be less progressive, we need to be more so. Affirm our position and show people why it is correct.

The reason the wingnuts scream about Moore is because he scares them. He speaks with a populist progressive voice and if we could find a candidate with that voice, without any baggage, he --or she-- would win.

Andy the wingnuts know it.

more with the "assuming" part. I'm trying to find out of I'm just completely crazy in my thinking about this guy. As much as I want to believe in him, I see him discredited by the right as much as Ann Coulter gets discredited by the left. And I know several republicans who are completely turned off by her.

P.S. - I hate Ann Coulter too!

54. I'm getting a headache already
As most of you missed the point of my post. Perhaps I did phrase it incorrectly. The arguements people are pitting against me?

Here's a basic short list: http://www.humaneventsonline.com/article.php?id=4565

Several others I'm sure. That's not the point. I'm not against the movie. I'm against the presense of Michael Moore & other showboats who try to somehow make it their quest to speak for democrats everywhere. That is best left up to the democratic leaders. If the press showed Kerry everytime MM stood up and said something, today we would have a different president.

I'm not against the beliefs of Moore. I'm against how he presents it. And I'm very bitter that Republicans pin him up as the poster child of this party.

It's not a discussion about the points Moore makes in his documentaries. It's a discussion about the man delivering the message.

129. Oh I just love "Lie #2".....
"The September 11th commission, on the other hand, reported that 22 of the 26 people on the flight that took most of the bin Laden family out of the country were interviewed and found to be innocent of suspicion."

Really? What did they ask..."Hey did you plan the attack" No?..ok,your free to go. What bullshit, they were out of here so quickly that a REAL interview could never have happened. Funny how we didn't want to trample on their rights but we can hold people down at Gitmo for three fucking years on NO charges.

Maybe Moore could have worded it somewhat better but the truth remains, members of the Bin Laden family were allowed to fly out of the US when NO OTHER COMMERCIAL flights were even allowed to carry AMERICANS to their destination. Do you find this outrageous? I sure as hell do!

21. Michael Moore did more to fire up the Dems this year than just about
anyone else. His books and films have received a lot of attention and have been rallying points for many liberals and progressives. In addition to this, Mike himself has worked tirelessly to promote a liberal agenda and used his celebrity to do this. His Slacker Uprising tour during the election encouraged many young voters to get registered and vote. How can you say that someone who his given so much of himself to a cause is somehow suspect and undeserving of our praise? Sure, Michael promotes himself as part of his political activities, but you know what, that's necessary these days to get media attention and clout for yourself. The reason the right wing hates him so much is because he is so successful in his efforts to get under their skin and expose the corruption and ugliness lying there. That success makes him a target, but I think he handles it quite well. I wish we had more Michael Moores on our side.

So much for their lack of judgement & lack of common sense.

All because of their hatred for gays & their short-sighted "pro-life" stance. If one values life of the unborn, then they should value the lives of our troops & the innocent citizens of Iraq who had NOTHING TO DO WITH 911.

It's only right that the Repugs discredit Michael Moore: The truth hurts. Let them cover their ears & chant their la-la-la-la-la's. We know truth isn't part of their "values".

Edited on Tue Nov-09-04 12:42 AM by Zinfandel
while our country was under attack NO ONE wanted to abandon the Democratic party.

When Moore was exposing the Bush Caryle Group, and their ties to the Saudi's I don't think any one wanted to abandon the Democratic party.

When Michael spent weeks traveling around the country getting unregisted voters to vote and speaking out about Bush's lies, I don't think any one wanted to abandon.

God almighty man, get a grip, do you just want them to stop attacking us????..just go lay with them. May I quote: "I ye love wealth better than liberty, the Tranquility of Servitude better than the Animating Contest of Freedom, go Home from us in Peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that Ye were our Countrymen." Samuel Adams, 1776. Hey what about Zell Miller, how do you feel about him as a fine upstanding defender of the Right......maybe if we were just more like him, the pukes would like us better. 38. I kinda agree here..
Michael Moore gave us some good work with "Bowling for Columbine." It explored excellent issues like how fear is basically running the country into retroactivity. Of course (and I accept any resentment here) Michael Moore is also a very good editor. I've never been a fan of the NRA or Charlton Heston but the way it was edited, you'd think Chucky hates minorities. Maybe he does now. But I do know that Heston also marched right beside MLK back in the 60s.

After the Oscar speech, I think that most people got turned off by MM. He's seen like our version of Rush Limbaugh. He takes kernels of facts and builds a house of cards. I saw F9/11, and he talked about fear some more...but never followed through. I thought it was very touching when he took himself out of camera shot for once and focused on Lila Lipscomb's family. If he would just talk more about poverty, fear, and how the GOP exploit them..jeez, I'd love him.
Until he does, he's just a librul wacko.

55. here goes
First, the stat about how many people think the war is wrong. Fine, great. I've never been for it. I marched in a few protests. I actively campaigned for change, and until whatever fraud issues are worked out, George Bush is still the president and he's the only one calling the shots. You don't make foreign policy based on opinion polls. You do it based on facts. George Bush just makes foreign policy based on whatever Cheney et al tell him. But I'm not sure what the stat has to do w/ MM

Secondly, when I say "he's just a librul wacko" I'm trying perhaps rather uneloquently to portray how MM is seen. And I'll go out further on a limb here: we all got a kick out of W never admitting to mistakes in his 4 years. But when do we look at the people on the left and wonder "gee, did he/she just say what I think she/he said?" Instead, we'll drag John Kerry through the mud (what a puss, giving up so early; we should have put up Dean; yada yada yada)..
we pride ourselves on second-guessing President Chimp or Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, whathaveyou. But if you second-guess Michael Moore it's a flame war..

Bowling for columbine it was old Heston that said the problem with gun violence was minority's,not Micheal Moore.

Now you may read into that as being racist,(which it is no matter how much you spin it )but even more it says that Heston doesn't have any Idea why or hasn't put any intelligent thought into why there is so much gun violence in the US.

42. Moore has done more to fight this administration than almost anyone
So let's throw the baby out with the bathwater, because your "repub friends" - kool-aid drinkers - like to trash him.

What is the fuel, btw? You think Moore is a liar?

The Bush cabal has cornered the market on lies, misrepresentation and propaganda... ironically it's his "followers" that are doing the trashing - not "mainstream America". Think about that for a moment.

Why not simply fight amongst ourselves? Why let the Republicans divide us, we can do it all by ourselves!

Start the games, "gentlemen!"

and you're buying what the Repugs are saying. Have you stopped to think that they're trying to discredit him (MM) to the world BECAUSE he tells the truth? Not only that but they can't control him and so they're out to destroy him like they do to all who dare expose them for what they are.

If you want validation just listen to Daddy Bush who this week made sure to try and discredit Moore to the world.

MM and all who have his courage need our support. Don't fall for the bs.

67. Give me an f'in break
Fahrenheit 9-11 was AWESOME. It was the first exposure that a number of folks got to the reality underlying their processed, sanitized korporate news!! The idea that libs are not supposed to be shocking in their portrayal of the facts is fucking absurd. Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter, Elder, the whole Fox News staff, and any number of others make their bread and butter exposing the country to completely slanted, partisan versions of "reality".

Its well past time that the libs put down their teacups and started getting in people's faces. Michael Moore is one of the shock troops in this fight. The reason the right whines as much as they do about Moore is a.) he is factual, and b.) he is effective.

God Bless Michael Moore.

He and all his swift boat liars are responsible for trying to tear down a man who fought for his country and served his country honorably.
He fired up the media with his lies about John Kerry. They're big massive campaign at character assassination was dishonorable, disingenuous, and downright dirty.

Maybe you need to refocus your hatred of Michael, to someone who truly deserves it.

Oh and in defense of Michael, he is an independent. He votes for the man not for the party. He also had to work to become rich, he wasn't born into wealth like *....

this list is evidently too 'liberal' and we need to disassociate ourselves to get more swing votes:
1. gays
2. women/choice
3. unions
4. the poor
5. intellectuals/scientists
6. blacks
7. John Kerry and the party as a whole
8. hollywood
9. Skinner and DU (j/k)
10. the environment
11. anyone who isn't a christian
12. just about every liberal journalist or activist group
13. youth/seniors

AND now, Michael Moore of all people!?!?! COME THE HELL ON!!!!! WILL YOU STOP AND ACTUALLY READ WHAT YOU POSTED FOR A MINUTE??

93. My view isn't as extreme as yours, but...
I do agree that F911 could have been a lot better. I, for one, didn't care for all of the emotional appeals the movie made. There was some very good content, but it was really just a left-wing version of knee-jerk reactionaryism.

He isn't an idiot, though, and his heart is in the right place. He is growing just like the rest of us.

A lot of us are really frustrated right now, but the truth is, if Kerry had been elected there would have been nothing but gridlock and the Democrats would be in even worse shape in 2008.

I really think that George Bush's victory in '04 will prove to be a long-term loss for the Republican Party, and there will be a strong Liberal upswing in the not-too-distant future.

Take a break from politics for awhile. Relax. This struggle has been going on throughout history and there will never be an end to it. That is reality.

Don't get all riled up over MM; he's just another dude trying to do the right thing.

102. You fail to present a single valid criticism
Why come here to smear him? This is not michaelmoore.com. He merely has reflected what all of us already knew long before F-911. None of us rely on him for new info.

What is your problem with Moore?

That he's fat? Unattractive? How much more all-American can you get than that?

He can be loud, brash, strident? Lots of more polished Hollywood types have made more subdued statements and gotten no press for them at all. At least he put Bush on notice - and at the Oscars no less. And history will prove Moore 100% right.

Has he ever promoted a lie in his films? Not that I know of.

I don't always agree with him or his tactics, but overall, I think he's terrific.

Have you seen "Roger and Me"? You should. Maybe then you'd have some idea why Mike is who he is.

Besides, the VAST majority of people who trash Moore are either right-wing shills or people who haven't actually seen his work. I wonder if you fit into one of those categories.

Anyway, thanks for your input. Perhaps you should e-mail it to Moore himself. Tell him how he can make his films better, or make his case to middle America in a more effective way.

Hey, no hard feelings. You like pizza?

Haven't you figured out yet, that the right is the ONLY group that is "allowed" to have an opinion?

The propaganda in the media couches EVERY stinking story so that the right is "right", and the liberals are always "explaining" their position , which is always somehow "opposite" of the lead in the story...ANY story..

Start reading these things with a critical eye, and you will see what I mean.. The use of language, and the specific coded words that are used...It's NO accident..

Nowhere have I seen ANYTHING that refutes any information in F9-11..It's always about the context of the usage.. Ask yourself this.... Are the right wingers not the Gold Medal holders in innuendo and out of context usage of "facts"?? (Swiftie Liars ring a bell?)

113. You make a good point, but your conclusion is bogus
Now when MM says something, half the freekin country immediately assume it's a lie or a gross exaggeration REGARDLESS of the truth of his statement. When legitimate democrat leaders stand up and say the same thing, they are completely overshadowed by Moore.

That is true - but what you fail to do is address the reason why this is so and what can be done about it.

Your solution seems to be that Moore should quit speaking the truth simply because he is demonized for it.

MY solution would be to create an army of Michael Moore's to counter the Limbaughs and Hannitys. THEN we could more effectively sway people into our camp.

Personal question to you (or anyone else for that matter): What are YOU doing besides bitching on a message board?

Canvassing?
Attending local dem meetings and recruiting members?

- And if you're wondering why this thread won't receive any 'respect'...it's because we're used to people coming to DU to bloviate and give their personal opinion that just happens to be contrary to the majority on the left.

his tickets to his slackers tour were only $5-15, when I saw Bill Maher a year ago it was $40. I'm sure Moore could have charged much more and his talks still would have sold out.

secondly, how could your repub friends "tear apart" 9-11 when not even any pundits or pols could come up with a single misstatement?
They were emotionally caught and not sure where to direct their anger, so direct it at Moore for messing with their emotions.

119. Can't imagine whom you imagine you're addressing here.
Edited on Tue Nov-09-04 06:57 AM by JudiLyn
As someone pointed out to you before you added more posts to this thread, this IS a progressive place. If you seek a small, bitter, hate-filled, xenophobic, racist, self-important, pompous, psychologically stunted, spiritually dead, dim-witted environment, you'd be unhappy here.

John said at least you tried.

121. Not every progressive thinks Michael Moore is a god.
And I don't like the "think my way and march in lockstep or get the fuck out" attitude.

126. no kidding, I don't care for Moore's arrogant attitude
I don't understand we people are so vicious here. Do we all have to share the same brain?! Bowling for Columbine was riddled with bogus info, it gave him a bad image and rep. 9/11 was right on, but didn't go far enough. Check out Alex Jones film: 911 The Road to Tyranny.

120. Michael Moore has long been a disservice to the left, but then came F911
Edited on Tue Nov-09-04 07:07 AM by Selwynn
No, one likes this opinion. But I don't care. This is supposed to be a place with an open mind.

I don't think highly of anyone who so frequently get his facts wrong and doesn't seem to care about it, whose presentation of material is so often misleading enough to do us a disservice. We are done a disservice when we rally around figures like Michael Moore with their sloppy research and self-serving stunts and less around some of the die-hard tireless voices of hard research, intellectual honesty and clear critical thinking.

Having said that, my distaste for Michael Moore came from his earlier films which had elements which where completely dishonest and from his books which were riddled with factual errors, that you can easily prove to be errors. And while those errors didn't really change the truth of his main points, it did show him to be a sloppy researcher who apparently used goggle as his main source of information.

However, with Fahrenheit 9/11 it seems that Michael Moore got serious. He hired a staff of researchers and fact checkers, and seemed determined to defend each and every claim made in the movie. Having watched the movie twice, I find it difficult to argue with much of anything presented in that film. Having researched a lot of the criticism's and critiques of the film I have yet to find anything that seems to stick.

My personal opinion is that somewhere along the line, Michael Moore personally woke up, grew up, and got serious. I think somewhere along the line his work became less about himself and the insane ammount of money he is able to make and really became about taking the country back. I personally think that in the process of researching and working on this stuff, I think it became more personal and even more serious to Mike. The reason I say all of this is becasue over time I feel like I've personally witnesssed a kind of change in him.

If Michael Moore could keep this kind of seriousness and determination when he writes his next book or produces is next film, then perhaps my opinion of him will continue to change.

122. Yeah, you'd think dems stand for truth ot sumpthin!
How dares Michael speak the truth, when we know so well we have to adopt their lies!
And to think he even supported a real leader, the one who made this speech

Shame on you, Michael!

123. I can't get my head around this post...
Kerry had the election stolen from him, fraud was rampant and more is been uncovered all of the time. How many undecideds voted for Kerry as a result of being sickened at what F 9/11 revealed. Michael Moore has done more to try restore America to its former glory in the worlds eyes than anyone else I know.

If Kerry hadn't had the election stolen from him we would have President elect Kerry with many thanks owed to Michael Moores tireless work. The fact it was stolen should not be let diminish Moores efforts on your behalf.

I don't use bad language on forums but why don't you go fcuk yourself with something with splinters in it.

and you BELIEVE your freeper friends? What bullshit! Michael Moore is fighting for this country and if you don't like it, too bad. You should be fighting with him, not against him! Daaaamn! F 911 opened a LOT of eyes. People who didn't know what their government was up to, knew when they left that movie. Leave Michael alone! We NEED him!
