Do you think good Republicans will stand up to Bush?
There is no intelligent person on this planet who would be surprised if Bush does something truly horrendous in the next few years, he'll probably push his limits as far as he can since he has a "mandate". Some moderate and even some conservative maverick Republicans disagree with this regime on some serious issues. Lincoln Chafee is only a Republican because..???

Here are some Republicans and the issues they disagree strongly on:

John McCain(Arizona) - campaign finance reform, Iraq
Arlen Specter(Pennsylvania) - choice, judges, labor
Lincoln Chafee(Rhode Island) - everything
Susan Collings(Maine) - intelligence reform, judges, choice
Olympia Snowe(Maine) - choice, medicare
Dick Lugar(Indiana) - foreign policy
Chuck Hagel(Nebraska) - Iraq
George Voinovich (Ohio)
Lamar Alexander (Tennesse)

The most popular and powerful Republican in the Senate is not Dr. Frist, it's John McCain. He campaigned for that shitstain of a president only to keep his significant clout in the party. If he stands up, many others will follow.

So, 44 Democratic Senators plus Jim Jeffords, and 6 maverick Republicans could give us a majority on some important issues like the Constitution, tax reform, or future invasions.

4. Chaffee, who votes with the Dems 90% of the time, said
he wouldn't leave his party. I was sad to hear that-he's more liberal than most Democrats.

7. Unity, blind dissent-squelching unity
No Republican on that list will dare to stand up to the powerhouse the Republicans have constructed. Their whole image is based on their party's unflinching support for their 'core' ideals. The first Republican who breaks ranks will be stoned and left for dead by the others, and their name will be dragged through the mud in the same way Mr. Specter's is right now by the good people over at freerepublic.

The conservative base has come to expect this lack of discussion on their issues of morality, so any Republican contender for office--senate, presidential, congressional--will be viewed as a traitor if they speak out of line, and they risk losing the entire voting block of their conservative base to someone who can better recite the Republican manual.

9. No, no I don't
and no one here should hold their breath waiting.

They are ALL in the same party, they will ALL march lockstep. Look at McCain. My God, they could bend him over and do him on TV and he'd not even ask for a tissue when they were done with him.

Nope. Not a single one will stand up to the cheney/* cabal.

the election was a farce. Bush's greatest threat
is from his own party.

15. Unlikely to see any spine out of the R's
Edited on Thu Nov-11-04 07:16 AM by Laelth
* is a totalitarian dictator. His own party doesn't have the guts to stand up to him. Remember KKKarl Rove sitting under the wheel of Air Force 1? I wonder what he did to displease the Chimperor on that day. Remember John McCain giving * a big hug after he was slimed by KKKarl in a completely morally bankrupt way in the SC primary? No way anybody dares mention that the Emperor has no clothes. * takes no prisoners.

If you haven't read it yet, check out Ron Suskind's essay Without a Doubt. It's the second entry in that thread. Shows what the insiders think of *'s leadership style. Pure dictatorship. No dissent tolerated.

Edit:Laelth--clarity.

16. No
politics in America is largely about control and winning. They won't distance themselves unless he gets in political trouble. The people and Constitution take a back seat to power and winning.
