No Sign Elizabeth Edwards' Cancer Spread

WASHINGTON - Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards (news - web sites), has begun chemotherapy to shrink a half-dollar-sized lump in her breast. Doctors found no sign the cancer had spread, a family spokesman said Wednesday.

After a 16-week chemotherapy course, Edwards will take a four- to six-week break. Georgetown University Medical Center doctors who are treating Edwards will then surgically remove the lump.

A needle biopsy of Edwards' lymph nodes Tuesday found "no indication of cancer," spokesman David Ginsberg said. "From what we know now, it has not spread."

As a safety precaution, however, doctors will remove some of her healthy lymph node tissue. Edwards will then undergo radiation.

Also, sounds like you need a loooong day at Church little fundie, your Christian attitude is wearing thin today.

Hope you enjoyed your short but decrepit stay. You freepers always show your inner evil eventually ... and with you, and GW it didn't take very long.

It's a relief to know that it hasn't spread. To cheer her along, I had Hodgkins back in the late 60s and am still here and causing trouble :D

My advise: have a beer or two--it's good for you.:toast:

17. My closest friend lost his wife last year to breast cancer.
The initial reports, like Mrs.Edwards, were also optimistic but we later learned that the reading of XRays from these patients requires a great deal of experience. There was an extensive series in the NYT on this problem where the experience in Europe was contrasted with
U.S. experience.According to the Times, only very experienced doctors are allowed to even interpret the XRays from patients in Europe. This is because unless one has learned to read these Xrays for tell tale signs one is likely to miss them.

Let us pray for Elizabeth and wish her and John the very best in their fight against this disease.

20. I am relieved, but doesn't a "half-dollar sized" lump sound kind of big?
My friends who have had a close encounter with breast cancer were told that THEY were lucky..and theirs were "pea-sized"..

34. yes, which explains why she's getting chemo first
usually, women with operable breast cancer have surgery, then chemo, then radiation.

They are most likely doing the chemo first to shrink the tumor in order to achieve an acceptable surgical outcome (ie, removal of the tumor with as little breast tissue as possible).

The size of the primary tumor determines the stage of the cancer, which affects prognosis. From the description here, she probably has stage IIA or IIB, at worst, which is still curable, although 5 year survival rates decline with advancing stage.

57. Many times a lump...
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 03:43 AM by Contrary1
felt on the outside will appear larger than the actual tumor.
My original tumor was only about the size of a jelly bean, but the cancer had spread so far out into the surrounding breast tissue, that mastectomy was the best choice for me.

I had had a mammogram 7 months before I discovered the lump during self exam. The lesion had showed up on the film. It was even circled, with a question mark. But the radiologist, for some unknown reason, did not write up a report on it. So the cancer had a head start. I was extremely fortunate that it was slow-growing.

The circumstances that led me to finding it were nothing short of miraculous. I won't go into details, but the bottom line is that God's not done with me yet.

Make sure you perform self exam every month...too many women rely solely on mammograms. Though they serve as a valuable diagnostic tool, there is no substitute for knowing your own body.

Our best to Elizabeth and her endearing family. Wonder if someone put that wonderful blessing on the Edwards. You know the one, "May you live in interesting times". I'm praying that they will have some peaceful times to strengthen them for when that damned "interesting times" blessing is poured on their head again. Love to the Edwards.

The last time I had heard and this was second hand the cancer was pretty invasive. The chemo is going to be pretty rough but hopefully it do its job and the doctors will take care of whats left. And that will be that. :)

For modern medicine and all those "intellectuals" who have built the machines and tools necessary to save lives.

Excellent news that she will be healthy! She was quite active on the campaigning scene and has quite a handful with their children!

54. HAS ANYONE ELSE POSTED THIS EMAIL FROM ELIZABETH?
Dear Littleleaguemom,

First, I want to thank each of you for the support you have given to John Kerry and John Edwards. You gave it in a thousand ways: coming to our events, volunteering to set up and clean up, working the phone banks, knocking on doors, contributing, blogging, standing on corners with signs, whatever it took. Your strength carried us through.

You may have heard that I have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Your strength is carrying my family through too in this latest struggle, and this is a fight we will win. We have (and I say we because John has been with me every minute) started chemotherapy with tremendous confidence, confidence in our doctors, in our ability to face obstacles, and in our friends far and near who we know give us their thoughts and prayers and support today and will continue to do so in the months ahead.

So many of you have tried to reach me recently with your support, and I know that the Senate office and the Wade Edwards Learning Lab have been flooded with calls and e-mails. No complaints there, but in order to take a little pressure off of them, I have resurrected my old e-mail address at elizabeth@oneamericacommittee.com, where you can reach me. I will e-mail periodic updates to you about my progress from there, if you would be interested in getting those. Treatment should last until about next June with follow-ups every three months or so.

I hope you understand how much your support has meant to us. This thank you is to our new and expanded family.

Elizabeth Edwards
