Yahoo! Gets Sen. Barack Obama Photo Caption WRONG

Before heading off to Washington and the U.S. Senate, U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Il., gets a hug from Sen. Mattie Hunter, D-Chicago, left, after lawmakers gave him a standing ovation in the Illinois Senate as he said goodbye to his former colleagues.

227. I THINK THAT IS OBAMA - and this mostly isn't funny.
Edited on Sun Nov-14-04 06:24 AM by Duncan
I've seen pictures of myself that bear less resemblance to me than that does to Obama, it has nothing to do with race, and an ostensible Yahoo error may have nothing to do with race either.

Why does everyone feel compelled to repeat the same joke over and over again anyway? Maybe I'm a drag, but for me, jokes are only funny once. Maybe thats why I never watch Saturday Night Live.

Whats more, this joke was only funny to me when I assumed that wasn't Obama. I'm not so sure.

108. I fail to see the humor, this is insensitive!

I have nothing against you personally.

I am African American however and when I read this thread , it is something that I would expect from Republicans, not liberal Democrats.

It appears to be the kind of thing that would be very hurtful to our new Sen. Obama.

We should be raising up our leaders, especially a new senator and the ONLY Black.

If the fundies get wind of this thread ,they will see that we can be just like they are. They could put this all over the internet as an example of what we believe.

That is not the way I believe that Democrats should behave.

150. Calm down.
I can do nothing to find out who it is. I wouldn't know where to start. But we're all allies here united against racism. But you have to be able to laugh at your enemy. It makes it weaker and you stronger. Racism is our enemy, and we're laughing at its pathetic nature.

And don't claim we're racists or Obama-haters. Sowing friction in the Dem party is counterproductive.

And this morning when I started reading this thread it was the most I laughed in I don't know how long. My husband had to come and see what was wrong. To me, it is in no way disrespectful of Senator Obama, in fact it is laughing at the white establishment media. The fact that he is the ONLY black Senator in this country speaks volumes and the fact that they couldn't tell that this man, although black, is not Barack Obama speaks even louder.

I respect your feelings and don't discount that you see it differently than I do, but I hope you'll rethink your position.

229. Thank you pbl. goclark definitely doesn't speak for all african-
americans. I'm African-American also and think most of this thread is hilariously funny.

I'm sure most black people in America can identify with being told they look like someone they barely resemble -- if at all. I've been told I look like Wesley Snipes, Arsenio Hall, Dennis Rodman, Eddie Murphy, you name it... having a respected news organization get it wrong just typifies the whole 'black male suspect, brown eyes, black hair' experience. You can be a senator-elect from Illinois, a celebrity, or just a regular joe, sadly to a lot of people we're still indistinguishable from one another.

No one has disrespected the distinguished gentleman, who is hugely respected here. Instead, they're poking fun at the photographer who blithely mistook one brown person for another. Where the hell has be been not to recognize Mr. Obama? THAT's what's so funny to me! I picture him first getting a call from his editor asking for a shot of Mr. Obama bidding his colleagues farewell and then shuffling madly through his castoffs before proclaiming, "Yeah, this'll do it!"

We liberals aren't so thin skinned we can't tell the difference between a joke and a racist insult. The right says we're hypocrites when we fight minority conservative nominees because they don't get it. It is the complete lack of false sensitivity and racism that frees us to enjoy a joke among friends and to fight the enemy, no matter his race or ethnicity.

That being said, the pics went on too long and got really silly. The first few made the point brilliantly. I think the sensitivity of all members should be taken into consideration and I'm sure none of us want to be responsible for causing Mr. Obama any embarassment.

210. That animation made me cry
My baby was electrocuted

I raised her from less than 1 week old, she fit in the palm of my hand (and I have small hands!), had to bottle feed her every few hours, 'piddle' her (which is a diaper, kind of) and even getting up at 4 am to get her a bottle was delightful

I watched her very first step, so hesitant! before long she was skipping all over the place.

She was literally my baby, in how I felt towards her and we had a special, constant bond... she was always with me, when she got cold, which was often, she'd come under the blanket with me and 'play tent' (sometimes I'd have to make a 'tent' just because she was cold but I wasn't).
She protected me -- when hubby & I would have an argument she got ALL upset. Just like as if we had human children, we found out that we couldn't argue 'in front of the kid(s)'

I never put her on her back to be cuddled like a human baby, but she started to do just that -- would come up, flop on her side and turn over just like you'd cuddle a newborn. She loved her warm slim belly rubbed.
Oh, and she would still 'nurse' off of my hand.

Anyhow, she was the love of my life. I had just thought the week before that every beloved pet (and person) would ultimately be fine if I were to suddenly die (not a very good premonition) but her. She'd be absolutely lost without me.

Well she predeceased me by chewing a lamp cord in half.
5 years old and healthy; and dead.

This may not sound very nice, but of all the 7 cats God had to take MY BABY?
I'm so mad at Him/Her I'm prolly going to hell just from what I've called Him. I don't know how I'll ever get over this fury... what a needless, futile thing to happen

My baby
My baby is dead. I don't know where she's gone.

Electrocuted at age 5
and I'm absolutely lost without her.

214. That's so sweet
but don't let me stop you from putting up whatever you'd like to!
I just saw that and it brought the grief to the conscious -- it's ALWAYS in the background, I can't seem to get over it very fast or well. Everywhere I look it seems she would curl up there, or in this window she would watch the outdoor world go by (Her version of television I guess :)
And of course there's that horrible table under which, on a few square feet of carpet, she died...

I still can't go near it. It's dusty? Too bad. It hasn't been cleaned since April and it's going to have to stay that way for a while. I avoid it like the plague.
It's a wretched but at the same time a holy spot. Strange.

I don't want to run on and on about it... most people would end up thinking it was only a cat. Yes, she was 'only' a cat but she was my baby too.

Yet it's easier to talk about now, and it feels theraputic. Unfortunately you're the 'victim' of my uluations. Sorry. I just saw it and had to speak...

You just post whatever you like hon, I know it's not personal. (I do like your new green one too :)

Above all I'd like to Thank You for being so thoughtful and so kind :)

African Americans. I agree that it can be perceived as humor at the expense of African Americans but I think the intention was the opposite.

On the other hand, if I put myself in your place and substitute all this with pictures of gay people... I would be insulted too.

How racism continues in this country is people ignoring the problem.
You attack the problem head on.

153. It's revealing and I honestly don't believe it is meant to be offensive
Alan Keyes was chosen not because he was the best candidate but because it was felt that he was the only one who could run against Obama since he was black. Although I firmly believe in affirmative action, this was not the reason that they chose to run a black candidate. They chose to do this out of racist motives believing that just because their candidate was black, they could sway the black vote.
The AP article shows just two things. One that despite how far we've come in race relations, we're still pathetic. The whole Keyes Obama thing just proves that. The right wing racists thought they could substitute "one for the other" and they were completely wrong. Two, the media is horribly incompetant.

i don't think the unfunny posts are meant to be offensive, and they are quite revealing. the GOP...laughable...they are transparent and black people aren't falling for their BS.
a few black republicans i know are crowing about a completely mythical 30% increase in blacks voting for *...which didn't happen. * only got a 1% increase from 2000, and of course we know a part of that supposed increase reflects the success of vote suppression schemes...or outright theft.
the AP mistake is truly pathetic. incompetent, indeed.

Speaking as a man in a wheelchair (a few years now), I have to say I would find it hilarious. As I see it, this isn't a dig at the good Senator, but rather a dig at the media. Nothing I have seen here has been disrespectful of the good Senator, but rather the Establishment and the corporate media. I'm sorry if you were offended, but I'm quite sure no disrespect was or is meant to anyone but the microcephalic idiot that captioned the picture. We can dis him or her safely, I think.

I completely get the humor and I am absolutely CERTAIN that not one of the posters is racist. What it does though is it reminds one of the racism that DOES exist in the world and which they must experience every day. So, yeah, it's funny because we're making fun of white racists. But it's a double-edged sword.

Let the fundies see it, and let them realize what it means. Let them see how ridiculous they are.

Let the media see it, and let them see us mock their bigotry.

And chill with the "us vs. the world" mentality. We're your allies. Don't challenge for the sake of challenging. Not every reference to racism is in and of itself racism. You can satirize bigots without making them stronger. Indeed, satire only makes them weaker. Please understand that.

154. You're anger is valid but misplaced.
Good sir,

I understand your anger, though I find it somewhat misplaced.

*We* are not suggesting that "any-ole' black-guy" will do. Rather, we are pointing out that in the White controlled media, a Black man in a suit can represent any other Back man.

*We* know who is in these photographs, and *we* know who Obama is. That's why we get the joke. Most Freepers might not even catch the error.

Indeed, I would suggest an nasty letter to the AP. We're just a forum group pointing out the extremity of the AP's cultural insensitivity.

It's kinda' like Bush II talking about "giving" sovereignty to the Native American tribal governments. The Native people realized very quickly that Unistat did not give them shit. They had to fight for it every step of the way. The "giving" verb got legs in Native press, but it was barely mentioned in mainstream press. If DU started a thread suggesting Unistat "re-gave" Freedom(tm) to the interned Japanese West Coast civilians after WWII, or "gave" peace to the people of Viet Nam, it would be highlighting Bush II's insensitivity.

Anyway, I understand your anger, I think it's valid, but I defend DU, as we did not start this mess--the AP did. We are just drawing attention to it.

178. It seems to me that what makes this thread funny is that these
are not stereotypes being pictured as Obama, but clearly identifiable celebrities, political figures and stars who are instantly recognisable for who they are, just as Obama should be, particularly to the AP. It turns the absurdity of 'they all look alike' on its head while castigating AP for its error.

Look! The Onion, a respected newpaper, believes the United States just physically lost the Iraq War! OMG! Why do they think we lost! WE'RE STILL FIGHTING IT!

Oh, yeah. It's satire. Right.

Mocking bigotry is not bigotry. You can defeat these things more easily with humor than you can with anger, actually. By laughing at it, you pronounce it it worthless and powerless. Anger shows that it still holds power over you.

I am not saying deny your heritage, but keep in mind most people of African decent have European ancestors as well, and vice versa!! Racism will exist forever if you keep refering to people's race. 174. Offensive is a hard word to define
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 02:00 PM by Lone Pawn
If we have several African-Americans saying it isn't offensive, one saying it is, a bunch of whites saying it isn't, and a few whites saying they don't think it is but can see how maybe someone else could...

Is it offensive? Is the one taking offense too thin-skinned? Are they actually being harmed? Is there really a hostile environment? How many have to believe it's hostile for it to actually be hostile? If I proclaim a hostile environment towards myself does everyone have to stop doing whatever they're doing? What if there were others like me who believed the same thing but didn't post? Impossible to know. So do we err on the side of protecting free speech and discourse at DU? Or do we err on the side of avoiding offense? If the former, is free discourse valid if members feel harmed? If the latter, do you not offend decent people by calling them racist and telling them to stop because one person took offense?

Hard to answer.

i suppose it's difficult to get beyond one-dimensional charicatures in that medium, but the "DYNOMITE" stuff was a bit much.

179. I think, as most have stated...
This was parody, and not meant in an offensive way at all. I have contacted AP about this discrepancy. I have received no reply.

While some of these are funny and some not, it has more to do with some people’s senses of humor than someone being racist.

This is no different than any parody, satire, or otherwise that you would see on things like the Daily Show or in the Onion. This is lampooning AP's obvious lack of fact checking, and it makes them look like they are saying "All black people look the same, so what does it matter. Here's a picture...” We have made fun of the news source, not the African Americans pictured here. We need to think clearly about things like this, and not become overly offended, when no offense has been perpetrated. This bickering is what divides us here on the political left, and we all need to calm down.

If this has offended anyone, I apologize. Not because anything wrong has gone on, but because someone was made to feel uncomfortable.

I would mention what color my skin is, but I don't think that should really matter.

i should say that i agree with you, except: how do you know if someone is or is not intending to be racist? how does one tell? a woman i know feels her co-worker gets paid more than her simply because she is white, and my friend isn't. my friend says she's more qualified and a better worker. she feels her supervisor supports her co-worker because they are of the same race. is this racism...or not?
how would i be able to tell her what it is or is not?
i don't mean this as an attack, but i hear this often when accusation of racism arises (unless its directed at the usual suspects)...the fact the it's not really the person's intent.

182. It doesn't air on Fridays.
Next show is Monday. So it is already too late. Or quite early.

BTW, my cable went all fuzzy last night -- only during The Daily Show. After the thread about us being reported to Homeland Security... I was little worried that Tom Ridge was screwing with me. See you guys & gals in Gitmo.

184. that's okay, the content isn't time sensitive
I only said "before it's too late" because Yahoo! might take it down soon.

It will be just as funny on Monday as it is today.

thanks

seriously, everybody should go and rate this picture a 5 and email it to everyone in your address book, so that it will be shown in the Most Popular section of Yahoo!

Compare it to the photo in post 163. Different hair; different suit. Different face.

In fact it was a walk down memory lane. There are many many recognizable blacks in our past. We can celebrate our diversity.
I especially liked Rummy the housewife w/Jesse Jackson.

230. the man in the picture is "Will Burns"
Edited on Sun Nov-14-04 06:16 PM by Kire
or, so says somebody on the Obama for Senate Yahoo! group...

I googled his name, there is a Will Burns who is
"Vice President of Programs at the Chicago Urban League"

and another site says he is "the senior advisor to the Illinois senate president"

and yet another says he was a favorite to replace Obama in the state Senate

I can't find any picture of him, though, to confirm.

235. Here's a pic of Will D. Burns -- looks like he's the guy!

He is a senior adviser to Illinois Senate President Emil Jones. Burns unsuccessfully vied for Obama's state senate seat.
