New England states making more, giving less

By LAURA WALSH
Associated Press Writer

November 10, 2004, 1:44 AM EST

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Residents of Connecticut and its New England neighbors continue to earn more and give back less, according to an annual index of charitable giving.

Connecticut ranks first when it comes to making money, but joins New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island in falling to the very bottom of the 2004 Generosity Index, according to the Catalogue for Philanthropy.

Mississippi held onto its title as the most giving state for the eighth consecutive year. Following right behind are Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama and Tennessee.

The survey is based on the average adjusted income of residents and the value of itemized charitable donations reported on 2002 federal tax returns, the latest year available.

1. Does it count donations to religious organizations as "philanthropy"?
Keep in mind also that blue states give more money via taxes.

4. I sure hope so
I run a religious non-profit agency. I'd hate to think donors were not allow to take a tax deduction.

6. How does insulting us help, I wonder?
More like the red staters are glomming on to anything to improve their self-image. They know what they've done.

Perhaps God won't send them directly to hell if they donate. Yeah, that's the ticket.

9. It doesn't
I'm just making a point.

Plus, I'm sick of logging into DU and reading about how I live in a part of the country that is sick and depraved.

10. Uh huh.
Voting for torture, rape, and gay-bashing is a sign of mental health? Voting for fiscal insolvency is sane?

Ya think?

11. Condemning everyone in a state
because the majority of the voters voted wrong is sane? Ya think?

14. You want it both ways, don't you?
You want credit for all of you being generous, but we can't say you're all nuts for going BushCo.

Excuse me?

3. Well, the blue states tend to have much higher costs of living,
plus they're cranking out shitloads of charity to the red states in the form of taxes.

But, I wouldn't be surprised if the more rural areas do tend to give more of their income, percentage-wise, to charities. They do tend to be rather generous people. And yeah, some of it goes to rightwing hate-filled churches and programs of hate; and some of it might also be a lot more pressure from churches to give, with less accountability and oversight than a new england person might require before giving money; but still, generosity is generosity.

8. Buying that ticket to heaven
My mother-in-law was sucked into the televangelist schemes.. This was a woman who got $323.00 a month from SS, and babysat to supplement her meagre income (plus what we sent her),,and when she died, her checkbook was FULL of $20 donations to :

Swaggart
TammyFay & Jim
The crystal cathedal guy
and many others..

13. This is based on itemized deductions.
I wouldn't call that an exact science.

I always take the standard deduction, as I suspect most people do, so a whole lot of charitable giving won't be counted under this method.

For another thing, when I donated some used items to a shelter last year, the man who took the items gave me a blank receipt which would have allowed me to write in whatever amount I chose. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a fair amount of dishonesty associated with the system, people estimating their old sweaters are worth hundreds of dollars, etc.

15. yep
these are based on itemized deductions, keep in mind.....

i don't understand deductions for "charity(ies)" anyway, nor do i agree with it necessarily..... i mean, if you give, and then use it as a deduction, is that *really* charity? and charity by whom?

i saw this somewhere else today after someone posted that brilliant "fuckthesouth" website, and pointed that out. i hardly think it proves anything, other than perhaps who has the greater propensity to try and reclaim some of their "charity."

16. Blue States have higher cost of living, pay more taxes.
Miss, etc. rank higher BECAUSE their per capita income is so low.

17. Well it may be so
I live in a blue state and with all the imposed mandates from Washington DC and the heapings of tax laid on by the state, county & locals including school tax we are pretty much tapped out. My school taxes are almost 3 times my municipal taxes and the kids still don't seem to be learning much. My county sales tax is 8.25% adding in Ny's tax on fuel and surcharges for everything we are becoming cash poor.
