Ken Schram Commentary: There Is No Saving Private Ryan

November 11, 2004

By Ken Schram

SEATTLE - There is no 'Saving Private Ryan'.

At least not at the almost two-dozen ABC affiliates that are too intimidated to air the award-winning movie.

I honestly don't know who's more at fault for this stupidity.

The FCC?

It sure has set the tone with its sudden strangle-hold on all things "indecent."

Of course, the FCC won't specify just what "indecent" means.

In typical bureaucratic double-speak, it says that would amount to censorship.

How about those simpering, whimpering broadcasters?

They regularly air crap that doesn't tweak what conscience they might have, but an honest depiction of war leaves them legally queasy.

What hypocrites.

2. I cry like a baby at the end of that movie.
Every time the old man looks at his wife and says "Tell me I'm a good man.", I just lose it. Every single time...

3. Fundies nearing total control of the (formerly?) public airwaves
In just one year we've gone from Janet Jackson's, um, wardrobe malfunction to "Saving Private Ryan" being "indecent" because it shows soldiers cursing.

Soldiers? Cursing? C'mon. Next you'll have me believing Hawai'i is a U.S. state :-) If you can't even show movies with the bad words bleeped out, we're gonna be stuck with Snow White 24/7.

Funny how (at least out here) this seemed to happen at the last minute, with a newspaper headline yesterday morning (and the other news channels brimming with schadenfreude at 5 and 6!). I detect an AstroTurf (not really "grassroots") campaign from the American Family Assn. :puke: or its ilk.

:scared:
