(Brand new) Sam's Club plans 90 layoffs at Honolulu site
Background: Sprawl-Mart fought for months to get permission to ruin one of the last large parcels in central Honolulu with a combo Sprawl-Mart and Sam's Club. They even got the city to do an "emergency" sewer repair just so the stores could open for the holiday season, thereby orking up my commute for months :grr: And this, this is the result:

The Honolulu Sam's Club plans to lay off nearly one-fifth of its employees on Thursday, exactly four weeks since it opened on Oct. 21.

The big-box retailer is cutting 90 of its 412 positions "due to business results being different than anticipated," according to a press release....

Patrick Loo, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union in Hawaii, said the layoffs are not surprising.

"They constantly over-hire, and this is part of their overall plan," said Loo, whose union opposes the company's use of nonunion labor. "When the doors open, they have a lot of people to service, and shortly after that, usually around two to four weeks, they will certainly get rid of a large amount of people."

Yo, Sam! Ever hear of hiring temporary/seasonal workers? The Post Office does it every year. People may have left real jobs for your illusory ones, morans!

Um, "different than anticipated"? :wtf:

2. Every time I pass it I visualize it closed and rededicated as a community
resource, homeless shelter, job training center, alcohol and drug treatment facility, transitional housing, nonviolence training, library, free educational movie and documentary theater, returning vets meeting group space, Free office space for Aloha United Way and other groups that are picking up the pieces of our society as fast as it can.

Keep on seeing it.
