10. One of those areas I can disagree with other progressives on
I support the Death Penalty, especially in a case like this.

I also support the second degree murder charge over Connor, although I think first degree murder is implicit in the act. My reasoning is simple. The fetus developed to a point where it could survive on its own outside the womb. This gives the state a compelling reason to protect the life of the child. Peterson knew his act would kill the child. Laci wanted the child. For all intents and purposes, under the law as laid out in the Roe vs. Wade decision, this was a human being whose life was taken in a premeditated manner.

Ergo, Scott Peterson should be held guilty for two counts of first degree murder.

4. Guaranteed to be overturned. Can't throw off "Not guilty" jurors.
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 04:22 PM by genius
Not enough evidence for a normal jury. And the "Bad Husband" verdict won't hold up for a second jury. And we're going to be paying the bill for all this nonsense.

Also, the judge made a number of really bad rulings that will likely be overturned.

My only concern is that the tax-payers will get the bill and, in the end, the state will lose - unless it gets a case outside of the "Bad Husband" case.

9. No opinion. I didn't hear the evidence. Is there anyone here
who heard it all in order to judge him?

I've never been able to understand why an ordinary couple gets such extraordinary media coverage when this type of murder happens daily in this country? Who can tell me why this became a so-called "high profile" case? Why does the media do this? Obviously, the media keeps it going.

13. The question has more to do with the death penalty
Edited on Fri Nov-12-04 04:27 PM by Caution
The jury has come back with a guilty verdict which means that it was proven beyond a reasonable doubt that he killed his wife and it was returned as 1st degree which means it was premeditated. Given that he *is* guilty, is the death penalty a proper punishment for the crime.

full disclosure: I am against the death penalty in all circumstances.

11. Who' are the jokers who think a white guy will be executed for being
a "Bad Husband." Hope you're not counting on it. It'll be overturned and he'll be acquitted on the second trial. The question is whether he'll get bail pending appeal.

14. The death penalty is overused
It should be a once in a lifetime thing. The only guy who should have been executed in my lifetime is Ted Bundy. He escaped from prison and killed again and it seemed execution was the only thing that would stop him. Even the man who murdered a close family member was not a candidate for the DP in my opinion (both then and now, and I was 16 at the time). I would have felt doubly awful if the state had killed him in my name. As it was, he died of the complications of age in prison.

I think this verdict will likely be overturned on appeal. There were too many jury shenanigans for it to stand, and it seems the prosecution played fast and loose with a real dearth of forensic evidence.

In any case, if he is found guilty in the future after new evidence surfaces, he will still only qualify as an ordinary, garden variety murderer. They can be dealt with more efficiently and cheaply in prison with no possibility of parole.

18. Yes he should....
I support the death penalty and any rich white guy who kills his wife and his unborn child deserves to die.

Some people say the death penalty is racist in that more minorities are executed.

I think the death penalty is racist because not enough whites are executed.

So lets make the death penalty a little bit more fair.

Murderers are murderers and they deserve to die.
