The south is not traitorous!
Okay, I'll start by saying I'm from Boston. So yeah, I'm not from the south, and yeah, I'm a true-blooded Yankee.

On the other hand, I have many friends who are in the south, and they are all Democrats, and were/are as eager to get rid of Bush as any northerner I know.

We can not and should not condemn people strictly on the basis of their geographical location! It's not fair to a great many people even right here on DU.

Whether someone is a pub or a Dem is NOT a locational circumstance. It's completely a state of mind. There are as many people in the North who are pukes--some of the worst kind. They knowingly contribute to Repuke causes, and elect Repukes because it is in their best interests to do so--NOT because they are blindly led to it, but because they are greedy, or hypocritical, or just plain obnoxious.

Yes, the pukes take advantage of people in the south more than in the North. I suppose it's because it's a more rural setting, there is a lot more poverty there in some places, and in some cases, education isn't as widespread. There are a MILLION reasons, and not all of them are because the south is that much more filled with ignorant people than the north! It's just NOT SO.

The only way we can reach those people is to figure out the reasons why they continue to support the pukes against their own best interests. It's NOT on an intellectual basis--at least not for the majority of people. It's probably a thousand other reasons, based on history, the Civil War (yes--there are people still moaning the losses of the Confederacy), emotional issues such as the second amendment, emotional reasons, religious reasons, ad infinitum.

We have to plan, and plan again, strictly on a national basis, to get people to see that they have been lied to, that their fears and misgivings were played to by the Rove campaign (why else would ANYONE support a coward than a war hero?), and try to reach a new unity that will transcend geographical location!

I know some people here are angry that the South went to the Pukes. I, too, am angry, but it's not the fault of the millions of Democratic Southerners, who voted for Kerry, and who participated in the cmpaign process just as much as anyone from someplace OTHER than the South! It's the perception that Rove and the RNC planted in the minds of these people long ago.

PLEASE--from now on, let's not go fingering Southerners as a single cause of defeat. If we are to have a country unified under one party, under one leader, it is IMPOSSIBLE to do that if we can't reconcile ourselves from ALL parts of the country. There is NO UNITED STATES if we try to exclude a section such as many are doing now. Let's get together as ONE NATION and trump the "enemy"--the people in this administration, NOT the people in the Southern states.

1. But the confederacy was.
And neo-confederates are bush's most ardent supporters. They still fly that filthy traitor flag.

I realize there are some great southerners, but I don't buy the "Heritage not Hate" line for a second.

2. Bingo! The Confederate Flag (RAG) is another Swastika!
Not all of the south is bad, but there are many screwballs who support Bush and fly the 'Flag of Hate'.

10. It's obvious
that you don't understand the reasons why some people insist on flying the Confederate battle flag.

17. Quaoar is one of my southern friends
And I'm glad he posted to the thread. Besides being a Democratic, he is also very involved in Habitat for Humanity, and other great causes. He is an editor at a major newspaper, and you couldn't ask for a better liberal, southerner and intellectual.

I wish people would at least make the effort to try and understand and accept the people from the south, because regardless of any other factor, they are as patriotic as any one of the rest of us! Just because there are differences in culture, for an example, doesn't mean that they don't share the same ideals, the same hopes and dreams, and the same sense of loss at the current moment as we ALL do.

Several of my other friends hail from West Virginia as well. They are intelligent people as well, and liberal as all get out. One is a physicist, and another is a computer engineer. They are also highly interested in liberal politics, and hate GWB as much as anyone else at DU.

People, PLEASE, put your personal prejudices aside. It doesn't matter how "red" a state was--if you look at a repuke's version of the states' maps, you WILL see a lot more red than blue, but you need to remember one major thing: in most of those "red" states, it is rural, and the general population in many of those areas is miniscule in comparison to the population of a big blue dot.

How can we, as a mation survive if we can not unify ourselves under one banner--the Democratic Party banner? Isn't that what DU is supposed to be about? Aren't we ALL supposed to be a single "unit" fighting for our country's survival? Aren't we ALL supposed to show solidarity in the face of the "red" menace? (And you can interpret that ANY way you wish!) I seriously think that we need to back off the emotional rationale we've been projecting, and try to accept that people in different parts of this country are as diverse as the individuals, their histories and their belief systems who support the Democratic causes we all espouse.

If you (meaning the plural "you") truly are a liberal, then you are of the temperament that everyone is equal, regardless of their differences. We have fat people, skinny people, short people, tall people, Catholics, Christians, Jews, Wiccans, Irish, Indian, Native American, blue-collar, pink collar and white collar workers, and many, many more people on DU. Why should, then a Southerner be any different than any of the others? Why should we ignore or show intolerance for someone who happens to be from the South? People--this country was founded on those many differences that made this country what it became over the 300+ years it took to build it. If we fall under the spell of the right wing, and allow any differences to keep us from working with others, regardless of who or what they are, then we are not truly Democrats or liberals. We are showing that the right--the "red menace" has overridden our more compassionate tendencies and we are in danger of being taken over by the "dark side." Let's remember that each day, and instead of using the forum to disparage others and call others names, (unless they're repukes!) we can show that we truly are capable of overlooking the differences we have from each other, and embracing instead the things which drew us together in the first place. :)

3. Good post.
And let's not forget the Northerners, even New Englanders and New Yorkers who voted for bush and think he is great. I know some!

4. Thanks hyphenate
It's not all our fault.
If you want to talk about red states, there's that whole swath up the middle of the country. Every freaking county went red in Nebraska. But I know that there have to be some good Democrats in Nebraska that feel like they are the only people on earth who are sane because they're surrounded by crazy people. I can sympathize with them.

Don't lump all us southerner's in with the republicans. Please.

6. The West also seems to be pro-idiot. I'm in the South here in
Kentucky and we worked so hard. Kerry had an enormous following. However, the rovian cabal put the homophonics on notice on the ballot that their world was endangered. Please note that we worked hard and tirelessly; I am now in a state of exhaustion and depression. We almost got rid of Bunning. We came so close. We are going to continue to work to take back our state.

9. Thanks from NC....& Help!
..I have been reading all of the anti-red state posts here since the day after the election. If I didn't happen to be stuck here in Greensboro, I would be outta this state faster than you could say "Jesse Helms sucks!". However, practicality reigns; I have a 10 month old and various monetary things to attend to. Rest assured I plan on blowing this Popsicle stand ASAP (which means about 2 yrs.) I would come join my democratic brethren in the north, but its to damn COLD up there guys!! I just really appreciate finally being among people who think the way I do and don't ridicule me for having a "soft" heart. It is so lonely here in repuke land; and to make matters worse, I have one LIVING IN MY HOUSE (abusive boyfriend/father of her child, etc.)Now I'm cursing my soft heart. Only because of our 10 year friendship and the fact that she has no where else to go keeps me from kicking her out on her bush-lovin' ass. Any advice on how to curb my mental anguish would be appreciated. BTW, SO glad I found this group!

15. People who want to throw stones at the South
ought to first look around and see if they are standing in a glass house. How many counties did Bush win in your true blue state? Outside of Chicago, Illinois is as red as an apple. Except for LA and the Bay area, California is red as a beet. Except for Portland, Oregon is red. Take away Philadelphia and what color is Pennsylvania?

So if you are intent on purging the country of its redness, you might want to look in your own backyeard first.

16. Props for my Southern hometown of Norfolk, VA
who went 60% Kerry. Don't mess with Navy, baby.

Eh, if you look at a county map, Kerry won in the bigger cities and lost in the suburbs, same as everywhere else. They were purple, just like alot of Northern states.

I can also say that we have plenty of Evangelicals of our own here in Wisconsin. It's not just a Southern thing. And the Right to Lifers are strong here too. We kept having to fend off an Abortion-mobile trying to drive into our GOTV operation at the local union hall. The Kerry GLBT people had to bring out their rainbow banner a couple times to scare them off. Amazing how that worked. I guess these guys were afraid of getting gay germs.
