And I'm glad he posted to the thread. Besides being a Democratic, he is also very involved in Habitat for Humanity, and other great causes. He is an editor at a major newspaper, and you couldn't ask for a better liberal, southerner and intellectual.
I wish people would at least make the effort to try and understand and accept the people from the south, because regardless of any other factor, they are as patriotic as any one of the rest of us! Just because there are differences in culture, for an example, doesn't mean that they don't share the same ideals, the same hopes and dreams, and the same sense of loss at the current moment as we ALL do.
Several of my other friends hail from West Virginia as well. They are intelligent people as well, and liberal as all get out. One is a physicist, and another is a computer engineer. They are also highly interested in liberal politics, and hate GWB as much as anyone else at DU.
People, PLEASE, put your personal prejudices aside. It doesn't matter how "red" a state was--if you look at a repuke's version of the states' maps, you WILL see a lot more red than blue, but you need to remember one major thing: in most of those "red" states, it is rural, and the general population in many of those areas is miniscule in comparison to the population of a big blue dot.
How can we, as a mation survive if we can not unify ourselves under one banner--the Democratic Party banner? Isn't that what DU is supposed to be about? Aren't we ALL supposed to be a single "unit" fighting for our country's survival? Aren't we ALL supposed to show solidarity in the face of the "red" menace? (And you can interpret that ANY way you wish!) I seriously think that we need to back off the emotional rationale we've been projecting, and try to accept that people in different parts of this country are as diverse as the individuals, their histories and their belief systems who support the Democratic causes we all espouse.
If you (meaning the plural "you") truly are a liberal, then you are of the temperament that everyone is equal, regardless of their differences. We have fat people, skinny people, short people, tall people, Catholics, Christians, Jews, Wiccans, Irish, Indian, Native American, blue-collar, pink collar and white collar workers, and many, many more people on DU. Why should, then a Southerner be any different than any of the others? Why should we ignore or show intolerance for someone who happens to be from the South? People--this country was founded on those many differences that made this country what it became over the 300+ years it took to build it. If we fall under the spell of the right wing, and allow any differences to keep us from working with others, regardless of who or what they are, then we are not truly Democrats or liberals. We are showing that the right--the "red menace" has overridden our more compassionate tendencies and we are in danger of being taken over by the "dark side." Let's remember that each day, and instead of using the forum to disparage others and call others names, (unless they're repukes!) we can show that we truly are capable of overlooking the differences we have from each other, and embracing instead the things which drew us together in the first place. :)
