New DU Group Suggestion: Peak Oil
Edited on Sat Nov-13-04 06:15 PM by NEOBuckeye
I'd like to see the mission of the group established as a discussion of peak oil, its' ramifications for politics and society, and possible solutions, up to and including organization for political action, and survival.

Don't know what Peak Oil is? Check out the following links. But be forewarned: You're about to take Morpheus's Red Pill.

peakoil.net
peakoil.com
energybulletin.net
lifeaftertheoilcrash.net

I'm actually surprised that no one else has suggested this one yet, seeing as how it's only going to become the most important issue of our lives for the next 50 years, barring of course, some kind of a miracle energy breakthrough. If you agree with me, please post your comments or feedback below. When we have at least 10 people, we can notify the DU mods, who will then hopefully consider adding a new group specifically for this critically important topic.

Thanks.

3. Count me in!
Great idea for a group! I first became aware of the Peak Oil crisis in the early 90s when I read James Kunstler's book "The Geography of Nowhere." Definitely one of the most critical issues of our lives.

6. Sounds Great
I've read alot about it.
No doubt in my mind that it is THE reason for the War on Terrorism.

Did you know that 60% of the known oil reserves lie in an area smaller than the state of Kansas in the mid east?

Cheney's energy task force.

Every time you see someone spouting off about 'Terrorists and Terrorism' just think Peak Oil.

Either they are ignorant or outright lying.

We are killing these people because they are sitting on the fuel we need to run our econonmy.

Its such a transparent charade.

10. War for Oil, or something like that
I just followed one of the links in the original post and found this:

http://www.peakoil.net/Newsletter/NL47/newsletter47.pdf

Search for 'saddam' and you'll see that some suggest that his year 2000 decision to sell oil in Euros rather than dollars was the catalyst for invasion.

8. Its funny...
you say the next 50 years, whereas most geologists would say 20 max, or already too late, as in it will be felt as little as a year or two from now. Who knows precisely, I need to donate dammit, so I can participate in a topic that WILL shadow all others in the years, possibly months to come. Oh, that reminds me, the Northeastern United States almost completely ran out of Natural Gas last winter, I wonder how much they have now for this winter. Considering that Natural Gas has peaked in North America, I wonder how many people are going to freeze to death this year because we may not have enough for this winter. Hope this winter is mild.

11. Would it be redundant with the Environment & Energy subforum?
I'm not sure if this is something that should be considered outside the context of the overall Environment & Energy discussion.

16. You have a point.

They do tie in together. But I still think Peak Oil, with all of it's implications, is large enough to stand on its own as a separate topic. At the very least, it must be a separate subset of the energy discussion.

It should have been the key topic in this election cycle. But both Democrats and Republicans conducted business as ususal, as if there was never any need to worry. We naturally expect that from the BFEE. But Kerry should have used it as a blunt object to bludgeon the Bush regime for their reckless pursuit of diminishing fossil fuels without foresight of the ultimate consequences.

Sooner or later (and probably much sooner), we simply aren't going to be able to suck what we need out of the earth to keep up our livelihood. If we had continued what Jimmy Carter had started back during the energy crisis of the 1970s, we'd be in a much better position to handle this problem today. Today, we are so far behind, and the Bush Regime, gluttonous, greedy bastards that they are, will very likely do nothing to even begin to try and avert this crisis during the next four years.

Peak Oil has to become the major focus of our counterattack over the next four years. Our very future depends on it.

12. I want in.
Maybe we can come up with good talking points for this while we're at it.

I've read about it, but I've run into too many people who seem to think that our oil supply is like a "giant bucket under the earth's crust," (yes, I'm quoting someone) and that a fairy from the milky-way refills every year, so we will never run out, no matter how much we use. Funny thing is these are usually the same people who think we should drill for oil in Alaska.

15. So, we'll never run short, but let's drill in ANWR...
I've never thought about how those two ideas contradict each other. I'd love to see them explain that one.

18. It's because we'll never run out of oil...
...but we should be focusing on using more of our own and not being so dependant on those "rag-heads" in the middle east who want to blow us up, or something like that. Sometimes I just have to shake my head and walk away...

13. Great Idea...this is really really important!
after following the links and reading my *ss off until 3:30 am last week on peak oil...I was...shall we say...frightened and shocked...as shocked as I was after reading "The lies my teacher told...the whitewashing of American History"...

We should actually be doing something about it once people get educated on the subject...

FYI...the Alaskan pipeline is almost dried up... I truly hope people read more about this...
