As well as the Internet. There is a rather good radio station that leases time to independent broadcasters at a relatively low rate in Maine, WBCQ, and they broadcsast on Shortwave anmd the shows can be streamed as well. They are a noncoprporate station and they broadcast anything from right wing religios broadcasts that run on the theory that the Anglo-Saxons are the lost tribeof Israel, to Left wing political broadcasts representing the largest grouwing group of beleivers in the U.S. who in fact are the non-religious ( they have increased by 50 percent in the last 4 years from 9 percent of the population to 14 percent) to A program called Odin Lives, dedicated to the worship of Pagan Nordic Gods. This is one of the only non-corporate owned radio stations left in the U.S. and they do nothing to control the content of the time slots thaey lease to private broadcasters. A lot of the old pirate4 stations fron the 60's 70's and 80's gave up their pirate status, got rid of the expense of replacing transmitters and studio equipment that was destroyed every time the FCC tracked them down, Not having to maintain the boats they later used to broadcast by getting outside of thew U.S. territorial waters, and have gone the cheap route and simply lease an hor slot twoce a week on WBCQ. Back in the early 70's some freinds of mine set up an A.M private broadcasting station form just outside of New York City, which broadcast at night and was a bit of an East Coast phenomenon for a few years. It was called WSEX and they had recieved QSL requests from as far away as Maryland for about 6 months until the FCC tracked their location and put an axe to the equipment.

They have the lowest rates in the industry, and rates vary by the time slot. A lot of the shows that broadcast make enough money to keep running by selling tapes of the programs plus stations gear like t-shirts and such. Radio New York is another ex pirate stations that has been arund for something like 30 years, though I think they have gotten rather right wing as they have gotten older. While there are a lot of left wingf programs broadcast on thid stations.

BTW, I agree with you about DU or DUers considering additional forms of communicating. I'm afraid that tighter control of internet access by the FCC and Homeland Security is just around the corner... it's the only form of communication they don't yet control, and it scares the bejeezus out of them... :hi:
