"Melting Swiss Glaciers Threaten Alps"
ZURICH (Reuters) - Switzerland's glaciers are melting faster than expected, shrinking by as much as one-fifth of their size over the 1985-2000 period alone, scientists at Zurich University said on Monday.

Hot summers in the 1990s in particular, prompted a glacier melt-down which has outpaced previous forecasts. It could impact tourism and cause more environmental hazards such as flash floods, scientist Frank Paul said.

"It is amazing what huge masses of ice have been lost," he told Reuters in a telephone interview. "Every hiker in the Alps knows about it: the changes in recent years have been dramatic."

While Swiss glaciers shrank a meager one percent in the 12 years to 1985, they lost some 18 percent of their area in the 1985-2000 period, the research showed.

Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and the Bush administration says so, and since they all have impeccable scientific credentials, they must be right.

Just ignore that melting permafrost and receding glaciers.

5. We have one, but it is our back-up vehicle. We don't drive it any more
than we have to, which isn't often since our other one is a very reliable Toyota truck.

6. because many other vehicles are just as bad
huge heavy old fart sedans like cadillacs get MPG just as bad a SUVs. why discriminate?

the problem is DRIVING, period. Even if everyone drove a Prius the problem would still be here.

7. Unfortunately, some of us live way out in the country.
I must drive, however, I often only drive once a week and I combine all my errands for the one trip in my high mileage Toyota.

I wish I could have afforded a Prius, but I couldn't . . .

8. That's why I ride a bike.
My CHEAP, compact car (36-40 mpg) has been gathering dust in the driveway since 2001. No need to buy an old fart sedan to replace a gas guzzling SUV or vice versa. One can buy an old car that gets good gas mileage, or better yet, an HPV - human powered vehicle.
