Time Magazine Person of the Year: KARL ROVE?
Karl Rove in Running for Time's Person of the Year

By Ellen Wulfhorst

NEW YORK (Reuters) - White House adviser Karl Rove topped the unofficial list of contenders for Time's 2004 Person of the Year, according to a panel assembled by the magazine on Tuesday to debate the question.

Along with Rove, widely credited as the architect behind President Bush (news - web sites)'s re-election, other candidates suggested by the panel included the president himself and filmmakers Mel Gibson and Michael Moore.

Time does not prepare or publish a formal list of nominees. Instead, the weekly magazine said its editors choose the person of the year after significant reporting by the staff.

The selection may well be none of the names suggested at Tuesday's panel, the editors said. The choice remains secret until it appears, this year, on the Dec. 20 issue cover.

In the meantime, the selection becomes a parlor game in America to guess who fits the criteria of "the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or for ill, and embodied what was important about the year, for better or for worse."

The person also must be alive, the editors said.

20. Thanks...
...I originally received an automatic/form e-mail message from his address confirming my donation, which I kept. I pulled it back up in my e-mail and replied to it so he can see that as part of my inquiry.

Hopefully, that will do the trick soon, but I realize he's very busy.

3. Bev Harris is my nominee
Karl Rove isn't a "person" so he's not eligible.

11. If that wasn't bad enough, Time totally wimped out in 2001
by not giving Man of the Year to Osama bin Laden. According to their own criteria, they are to award it to whoever has had the most effect, for good or ill, on the world. (I don't remember who they gave it to that year, Gulliani maybe?)

Even as a baby, he had a distinctive look about him

College years...didn't study much..

There was a time he "let himself go"..before W saved him

His parents feared he would emulate his brother Kevin

10. Wasn't Hitler man of the year?
It doesn't have to be for 'good' reasons it is for the person that has the biggest impact. Bin Laudin should have gotten it instead of bush.

13. Maybe they'll choose one of those abstractions...
...like "the terrorist" or "the American soldier." Why not "the red state cracker" for voting to make a complete break with whatever was once good or noble about America?

15. makes sense to me...I put him up there along side Hitler and Stalin (M
and weren't they both named Man of the Year..afterall it doesn't mean the person was a *positive* newsmakers...just a very important one as far as what occured in the past year...and Rove definately was that...his actions had more impact on the world last year then anyone else...just in a NEGATIVE fashion...

18. If it is proven he stole the elecion, will that be person of the year
of Defendant of the year (easily nudging Scott Peterson out of the running and not worrying about Ken Lay because the press doesn't)?

23. Hmm. Well, they did say "good or ill".
Of course, when they should have chosen Osama, they went the softie route and picked Giuliani, and last year they picked "the American soldier", which isn't even a single person.

The editors of TIME seem to be pussies when it comes to Person Of The Year.

They did Hitler one year, it doesn't always have to be someone who does something GOOD.
