Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites), nominated to be secretary of state, will undergo a minor surgical procedure at a Washington hospital on Friday, a spokesman said.


Sean McCormack said Rice would remain overnight at the hospital and return to work the next day or so.

Rice is having a uterine fibroid embolization, a minimally invasive procedure to block arteries that supply blood to fibroid tumors, he said. It did not involve cancer or a life-threatening condition, McCormack said.

There are a number of options with fibroids- uterine fibroid embolization involves shooting little plastic pellets into the arteries that feed the fibroid, to cut off blood supply and keep them from growing. It is something they are studying as a treatment for cancerous tumors. The theory is called angiogenesis or something like that-

They can also surgically remove the lining of the uterus to remove fibroids, which doesn't affect hormone production, but that precludes any future children (not that I imagine children are in COndi's future- the thought of that woman as a mother is really pretty frightening).

They can also surgically remove just the fibroid, a procedure known as myomectomy. That is major surgery and is usually done when preserving fertility is a primary concern.
