WV is getting E-Machines and I'm starting a battle
WV is getting Electronic Voting machines so I guess I'll have to start a battle here to get the people to listen and become educated on the travails of E-voting.

My first step was to send an email to Alan Waldman, asking him to send his article "Was It Hacked?" to WV newspapers. Hopefully some of them will print it. It is an excellent article detailing the election rip-off. I provided the address and phone numbers and websites to some of the newspapers, and websites to the rest of the papers I could find.

"WAS IT HACKED?"
http://www.orlandoweekly.com/news/Story.asp?ID=4688

I am going to send the article to the senators and reps on the federal and especially the state level.

Here's my email to Alan Waldman:

I just read your article, "Was the Vote Hacked?" in the Orlando Weekly News. It is excellent, because it lists the problems in a precise and easy to read order. It is very good.

I would like to ask you to submit this article to the newspapers in WV, because the state is getting ready to buy electronic voting machines. We still use punch cards in my district. I've included the contacts and websites for some of the newspapers in WV.

Even though this state voted for bush, the state level of government is controlled by the Democrats, but unfortunately the Secretary of State was won by an unknown republican (against a popular Democrat). This was a big surprise to almost everyone. We all know what happens when a republican is elected to this position.

I think your article would help open the eyes of the Democrats in office here, because first and foremost it would make them a little anxious about their job security.

Thank you,

Amelia Whittington

2. Here's some work on poll results for WV
http://www.geocities.com/lynx444/WestVirginia2004.doc

Of course, you may want to check the data.

And the next step is touch screens? Want to bet that comes with an all electronic poll book? Are they talking to Diebold?

3. Lobby for a system that provides a verifiable paper trail
There are systems that can be recounted. If he doesn't listen, go public and cast doubt on the wisdom of selecting a machine that does not allow a recount. Ask why does he want a machine that does not allow the voters to know if their vote will be counted properly.

Organize. Find others who feel the same. Go to Bev Harris's site to educate yourself. Buy her book or download it if you can't afford it right now.

7. The current SOS is a Democrat
...but he was just elected governor. He was holding off on buying any electronic machines until they could produce a paper trail. The few machines that we have are owned by Diebold. So I think that the new republican SOS will be pressured by some of her republican friends in the future.

8. amelia....
go to VotersUnite! (www.votersunite.org) and download a document called MythBreakers for Elections Officials (http://www.votersunite.org/takeaction/mythbreakers.pdf). This is a document that we have put together that has facts and not lies, half-truths, and spin that elections officials get from the vendor.

Then go visit your local county election official and sit down with them and talk about voting systems. Give them Myth Breakers and ask them to read it.

Let us know that you've pass on a copy and who got it so we can mark off that county. Ask friends in other counties to do the same thing.

The problem is that the vendors deluge these poor elections officials with so much misinformation that they have no idea what is true and whats false. Myth Breakers should help to clear that up and the fact that you have taken the time to talk with them is a big plus that works. And, please let us know how things went.

11. Ask the Sec. of State, why not optical-scan ballots?
They're cheaper, easier to recount, and allow faster voting.

And with the AutoMark machine, they can be used by the blind.
