I am officially becoming a Democrat!
All the time I have posted here, and most of my years as a voter, I have been registered as an independent. But last night, I decided to make it official. I went to the post office, got a registration form, chose the Democratic Party, and mailed it. I will be very proud to be a Democrat!

9. The issues!
When the primary election was going on, I can honestly say I liked all of the candidates and would have proudly voted for any of them had they gotten the nod. When it comes right down to it, Democrats blow Republicans away on most issues. Freedom, equality, and civil liberties are issues that are very important to me, and Democrats share those values.

12. OK then
Why were you an Independent in the first place? Please understand that it would seem to me you are just trying to score points or something and have never been a genuine Indie.I do not mean to be rude here just declarative.......

To see the Democratic Party disintegrate so obviously, to see them , for the last eight years or so, shut out the Progressives within the party from any major role, to see your name with its implication of left leaning yet read that you accept the right leaning leadership and all that this implies makes these questions necessary for me to understand your enthusiasm for the party.......

Your response above is really an historical perspective of the party and just isn't true today. Kerry enthusiastically supports the war in Iraq, do you? Clinton, in his speech at the opening of his library, expressed his support for George Bush, do you feel as he does?

Where, in the recent campaign, did Kerry express any support for the values of the left? On the contrary, all we heard from him was that he would do exactly like Bush only better, he had "a plan" for this and a "plan" for that but what these plans were was seldom forthcoming. Is it any wonder that he lost? (if indeed he did....)

I just think that a true left leaning voter would insist upon a higher standard from a party s/he would express such overwhelming support.

15. I used to be more of a swing voter
Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 03:51 PM by Pushed To The Left
until the Summer of 2003. When the Supreme Court overturned the sodomy laws, the reaction of the right-wing made me see that they needed to be defeated. I don't think that the government has any right to tell consenting adults what they can and can't do in the bedroom, which I thought most people would agree with. Apparently, the right-wing was worse than I thought!

I was an independent because I didn't want to follow a party line. I still don't, but it is now clear to me that the Democrats blow away the Republicans on the issues I care most about. I didn't feel like a true independent anymore. My experiences volunteering for the Kerry campaign, posting here, and listening to the rantings of the right-wing have made the choice clear. I'm still fairly moderate for a DUer, but the actions of the right-wing have made me more loyal to the left.

As for Kerry, he DOES support liberal values. He is stanchly pro-choice, Bush is not. He would have appointed SC justices that went by the law, Bush will try to appoint right-wingers. He opposed the Federal Marriage Amendment, Bush WROTE the damn thing. Kerry opposed the outsourcing of American jobs, Bush supported it. Kerry is Bush-Lite? I don't think so. I'm not going to throw away a good candidate, organization, Party, etc. just because I don't agree with them on every single issue. I will be proud to be a Democrat, whether others like it or not!

17. Ahhhh a single issue voter
Well then welcome to the progressive side and welcome to the democratic party, I hope it does you some good.....though saying
Kerry supports Liberal values is more of a stretch than I would care to make. While his support for a womans right to choose is fine there are far too many other issues on which he sidesteps the nuts and bolts or, as in the case of the Iraqi invasion, is on the side of the right.

20. No, not a single issue voter
Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 09:54 PM by Pushed To The Left
I mentioned that I agree with Democrats 90% of the time, and mentioned several issues where Kerry was superior to Bush. I don't know where the single issue idea came from.

14. Me too!
I actually voted straight Democrat here too. This was my first election so I was pretty proud of myself.

I had originally registered Republican when I registered to vote, but that was pretty much out of ignorance. It wasn't until this election that I really paid attention to politics and was able to truly form my political beliefs; of course, the whole issue about gay marriage and the war also swayed my decision too.

Pretty much the day after the election I went down and officially made the switch to become a registered Democrat so I am anxiously waiting the next primary season! :)
