Maybe we need to reeducate people
Seems that so many people have swallowed the lie that abortion is evil, unnecessary, etc, etc. The fact that they call dialation and extraction "partial birth abortion" shows how the right to lifers have taken hold of the dialog and bent the discussion to their ends.

What we need is to tell people the truth about these procedures. That D&E is used when a fetus is dying, or dead, or has a condition what will allow it to live for at most a few days in pain and agony and that the safest way to spare the mother's life and to find out what happened is to do this procedure.

Sure, some abortions are used for birth control, but not all, and definately not the procedure described above.

What I'd like to see is a series of films about women with problem pregnancies-how they wrestled with their decision as to what to do. It would be good to show that choice is a serious matter, not something done casually without much thought, which is often what right to lifers imply.

Have any such films been made? Anyone know?

1. We need to start with education period.

If you did discuss abortion in schools in any way (where it needs to be done) in the current climate watch out.

Yes there are medical films they are taboo in Public Schools.

I expect reeducation in this country some day. Vietnam style.

2. symptomatic
The abortion issue is just a symptom of a greater problem ,imo.....We (Americans) are weaned on 10 second spot messages and have seemingly lost the ability to actually think, research and compare.

People search only as far as a word or phrase that appeals to them and then settle there with no further thought required......

Yes I know that this rant gives no clue as to what exactly to do about this....Ive no clue other than to kill your television.

3. We're going to have to get in their face
Just like they get in ours, and I mean getting as tasteless and ugly as they do.

Show them a picture of a hydrocephalic fetus with a head that's filled with 2 gallons of fluid, 2 to 3 times the size of an ADULT head, who will never gain consciousness even if it happens to be born alive.

Interview women who've lost their ability to bear children in the future because a D and X couldn't be performed, and their uterus was too damaged by the hysterotomy or C-section for them to carry a pregnancy to term without the possibility of rupture and bleeding to death.

Interview the woman who was forced to carry a pregnancy to term and lost her job because of it.

Interview the family who has to care for their profoundly handicapped child for the rest of its natural life because they didn't discover the problems the fetus had until too late to have a simple abortion, and the hospital decided to perform heroic measure to keep the baby alive, against the parents wishes (this happened in Texas, BTW. The parents lost their "wrongful life" lawsuit against the hospital).

6. This would amount to illegal discrimination
Interview the woman who was forced to carry a pregnancy to term and lost her job because of it.

Why blame the woman for losing her job for carrying her kid to term? In this case, the employer took away her right to choose. It's the fault of the employer, not the pregnant woman, and I think it's a crime to make her choose between her baby and her job.

7. Of course it is, that doesn't mean that it doesn't happen ....
and uplannned pregancies happen and the reason for most abortions is financial. Most women and couples would prefer to have a "surprise" baby if they can afford it. Sometimes they just can't. With Bush's lovely economy, 50K more couldn't EACH YEAR HE WAS IN OFFICE. That's 200K abortions that took place because of him. This is just as much a part of abortion rights as anything else.

4. I would think
that's the job of Planned Parenthood, with all the money they take in by fanning the flames of fear over the potential repeal of Roe. Might be a good long-view investment in reducing their daily expenditures on services.

5. The medical term is "missed abortion"
for a dead fetus who doesn't come out on his or her own. In that case, the D&E is used to expel a kid who's already dead, because keeping a dead kid in Mom's body will kill her--it's only a matter of when.
