Anyone know a "Poster Girl" for the fight against Bush???
Thanks to all the DU that gave me great links for my painting of Jackie Kennedy Onnasis! I need your help again. As a follow up to the Jackie painting and vietnam prostests, pre and post JFK, I want to do a painting for the divisiveness of today. I don't live in the states currently so, I'm not in touch with our current icons, if there are any anymore. This series of anti-war, anti-establishment series is centered around stong dignified women. The anchors of the painting if you will.

I would appreciate your suggestions of strong American women. Links would me great to their bios also.

Thanks in advance DU

3. How active are they?
I want solid voices. This series is using old Vietnam prostests sign for LBJ, like "WAR CRIMINAL", and replacing Bush's name with LBJ. I need strong voices. I was originally thinking Angela Davis, because she is still active in the fight for political prisoners, but because of my location, I don't know if she's been outspoken against the addministration. And as I recall, the Dixie Chicks recanted their anti-Bush remarks after Texas radio stations stopped playing their records and bull dozing them.

16. I don't think they did
Considering they were on MoveOn's tour with Bruce Springsteen.

19. That's true
In fact, they reasserted their distaste for the nitwit during the initial brouhaha, and continue to do so to this day.

21. Yeah, they said they were sorry that Bush is from Texas
On a European tour and Texas radio stations got a hold of it and started doing Dixie dozings of their records. They came back and apologized. Yes, they remained anti-Bush, but not as outspoken. This happened just after the first election steal.

4. Cynthia McKinney would be good
Edited on Sat Nov-20-04 11:44 AM by charlie
She's irrepressible and pretty much fearless. Her congressional bio:

http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=M000523

And check out her recent victory speech, it's powerful stuff:

http://www.cynthiaforcongress.com/news/statements/11-02-2004.html

Edit: A teaser, to entice people to read the speech:
I predict that the American people will send a resounding message tonight that the war machine--must stop now.

But there's another kind of machine of which we must beware that lurks among us: and that's the corporate propaganda machine.

Leaders who dare go against, or merely even question, the policies being polished by a slick media machine can get sucked up, chewed up, eaten up, devoured.

Or in a familiar set of words more famous than my own: "expose, misdirect, discredit, or otherwise neutralize" such leadership. "To pinpoint potential troublemakers and neutralize them." These words are straight from the FBI during its program to counter dissent in this country.

And as we have seen in the cases of both, these immensely powerful and monied machines take their aim directly at the people.

Breaking free of the influence of both these machines heralds a new way of thinking. And that's what this campaign was all about.

We really believe:

that a multitude of people can outweigh any special interest every time; that media magic has little persuasion over an informed people; that we as a people are way more powerful when we turn to each other and not on each other; and that we can embrace the human rainbow, celebrate our diversity, focus on our commonality, and together, tear down the mightiest walls of oppression and injustice.

Evidence of the power of this new way of thinking is here tonight in this room and in our election numbers.

And so commanding is our presence, and significant is our mission that what we have now accomplished in Georgia's Fourth Congressional District, is being broadcast by the best of America's corporate media: Who said the revolution wasn't going to be televised?

I've put her in my favorites folder of Modern Female Leaders, I'm starting my database and research tonight so that I can start the painting this Monday. And I'm in Paris so, I'm a few hours ahead already.

12. You got a link to that?
I need the female figure as the anchor that I'm painting in. But in the background, I'm going collage work from magazine, and newspaper clippings. And from newsights on the web. Plus cartoon cutouts.

22. That's her!!!!
Thanks, she is just amazingly articulate. I could just listen to her make her points all day. She was the best thing to come out of the survivors of that tragedy. Her ability to articulate their grievances and tireless effort to conceive the 9/11 commission, makes her pretty close to, if not, a heroin in my book.

31. She's my favorite activist
"Haddock's latest crusade is called Working Women Vote! 2004. She and her fellow activists are traveling around the country, taking on the jobs of working women who need a break from (work) to register to vote.

A recent job swap saw Granny D filling in for a mermaid at Tampa's Weeki Wachee Springs theme park -- she also helped feed alligators"
