DeLay says he's being persecuted, levels charges at Pelosi:

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Texas and the Democrats' minority leader, Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco, intensifying the rancor between the parties, swapped charges Friday over their ethical records in a dispute arising out of a case in which DeLay was admonished last month.

Republicans, who used the ethical problems of Democratic House leaders as a vehicle for riding to power in 1994, claimed Friday that the Pelosi-led Democrats, helped by the media and partisan Texas prosecutors, were persecuting DeLay in an attempt to regain their majority.

Pelosi and the Democrats say DeLay's record, which includes four admonishments by the 10-member bipartisan House Ethics Committee over the past decade, speaks for itself.

The imbroglio shows that the House's partisan divide remains wide and deep and that the icy relations between the top Republicans and Democrats in the House will make for bitter quarreling in the GOP-controlled 109th Congress opening in January.
