Dolphins Proving Extremely Valuable to U.S. in Arabian Gulf

In this photo released by 5th Fleet U.S. Navy, Phantom, a 23 year-old dolphin, rests after leaping out of the water with the aid of his handler and trainer, Construction Mechanic 2nd Class Eric Taylor, during an on-site training demonstration Friday Nov. 19, 2004 in Manama, Bahrain. The MK-6 Marine Mammal System (MMS), of which Phantom is a part, from Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, San Diego, is currently on its longest combat deployment in history.

The dolphins deployed as underwater sentinels to the Arabian Gulf region by the U.S. Navy last year have been valuable in protecting coalition ships and piers against terrorist attacks, a Navy spokesmen said Friday.

The dolphins, brought to the region in spring 2003, are trained to detect, locate and mark a threat swimmer or diver and alert their human handlers.

"The mission is going well. The dolphins have provided a very valuable layer of defense here," said Lt. Josh Frey, spokesman for the 5th Fleet, which is based in Bahrain. "We judge their success by the fact that no terrorism has occurred here."

8. I guy I used to know had an Afghan hound
and he said those dogs were bred to keep snow leopards away from goat herds. He also said that since he got the dog he never saw any snow leopards in his yard. So in the same way I guess the presence of dolphins explains why there has been no underwater terrorism.

2. A Carl Sagan Quote-
It is of interest to note that while some dolphins are reported to have learned English (up to fifty words used in correct context) no human being has been reported to have learned dolphinese.

5. And a certain DUer exploded at me for keeping a pet parrot...
:eyes:

I feel sorry for the dolphins. I wonder how many have been killed, and how many will now that this report has hit mainstream media.
