Bush makes an ass out of himself in Chile.
I am so embarrassed for all good Americans.

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) - An elaborate state dinner Sunday night for President George W. Bush was scrapped after U.S. and Chilean officials failed to agree on security measures at the presidential palace, the Chilean news media reported.

Bush and Chilean leader Ricardo Lagos instead were to hold an informal working dinner Sunday night following the close of the Asian-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit, leading Chilean newspaper El Mercurio reported Sunday.

The decision came Saturday night only hours after Bush intervened in a confrontation and pulled his lead Secret Service agent away from Chilean security officials who had barred the president's bodyguards from entering a dinner for 21 Pacific Rim leaders, including Prime Minister Paul Martin. <snip> more...

I can assure you that the new dinner arrangements are a polite way for the Chileans to say, you are no longer welcome.

7. He's going to Canada later this month isn't he?
That should be good. Wonder what costume they'll have ready for him. I think an orange one-piece jumpsuit would be perfect, (it's what our local prisoners wear).

3. Actually, the ponchos are part of the Chilean cowboy outfits.
They are called quasos rather than guachos like in Argentina. Part of the outfit is silver spurs of fine workmanship over boots. However, they don't use them for horsback riding but for dancing. They do kind of flamenco type zappatias while clinking the spurs against each other in rythm. It's quite fun to watch.

9. O.K. Did you know this?
That the first cowboys in America were actually African slaves. In colonial times the Carolina region was the ranching center of our budding nation. The first cow hands were Africans. From American Colonies: The Settling of North America by Alan Taylor

"An elaborate state dinner"

These things take lots of planning and preparing. It was to late to cancel the food, etc. They cost big money.

Things had to be terrible to cancel it. Looks like Pootie Poot was there also. The details to these things are always cleared by the SS well in advance.

What happened?

5. Reading between the lines, this is what happened.
Bush demanded, they cancelled. No matter what it cost, they weren't about to let dumbass push them around. So Bush will have a private dinner with the Pres. and his wife so as not to make the incident even worse and politely asked not to come back.

26. Translation
At the beginning of week already the difficult things were seen. Monday, when the equipment of outpost of President George W. Bush was long hours in the Currency knowing the safeties that had implemented Customs officers, the faces were not very glad.

The exigencies of the secret service were about to to surpass the patience of the Chilean police. Even, that one tried to bet its men to the interior of the palace, which was considered unacceptable by the Chilean uniformed ones.

“We are the ones in charge of the security to the interior of the Currency; nobody more”, sentenced in the eve a high official to the being consulted by this American demand.

But the things arrived at their limit when the security of Bush tried that almost the 300 guests to the official supper of today had to happen through the metal detector.

The consultations went at high level, according to it was admitted yesterday, and Lakes at the most difficult moments of the negotiation even arrived until own President Ricardo.

Before the refusal of the secret service to change this exigency, it was chosen to look for a diplomatic exit.

“It is that the President Lakes considered whom unacceptable the main authorities of the country and outstanding businessmen were put under this revision that is until humiliating”, confidenció a high diplomatic source.

To the supper they had to concur representing of the three powers of State. From the presidents of the Senate and the House of Representatives, happening through the president of the Supreme Court, the Commanders-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Customs officers, parliamentarians, ministers of State, industralists, among other personalities. Each one of them with its spouses

Saturday was already rumored that the official banquet did not go. It was expected until last hour to confirm the news with the purpose of seeing how the subject evolved, but before the inflexible position of the people of Washington, it was chosen to suspend the social activity.

Minister General Secretario of Government, Francisco Vidal, explained that both presidents decided “to make a species of retort of which made the President Lakes when he visited some Washington weeks ago”.

In that occasion, the 19 of July, Lakes first met solo with Bush and soon they had lunch with its advisers.

The today supper will be made in the deprived dining room of the President Lakes, in the second floor of palace, that has capacity for 24 people.

According to it was confirmed, only the agent chief executives will be with his respective spouses.

They will attend the presidents of the Supreme Court, the Senate and House of Representatives and some ministers, but without its spouses.

From very early, personnel of protocol of the Currency began to make urgent calls to the guests to inform to them, to be thankful and to apologize to them by the suspension of the event.

Respect to the tradition

The fervor whereupon has acted the Guard of Palace of Customs officers not to allow that it is taken part in his tradition to protect the security of the Currency has been well-known.

Thursday in the evening, in the occasion of the official visit of the President of China, Hu Jintao, their guards tried to enter towards the patio of the Camellias, where the Asian Agent chief executive and the President Lakes would give the press conference. But Customs officers acted with energy and he did not allow the access them, which produced some rubbing smaller and small pushes with the members of the Chinese security. These measures also extend to the escorts of the Chilean authorities. Friday, for example, to the bodyguard of the minister of Property, Nicholas Eyzaguirre, who also is civil employee of Customs officers, did not allow the step either him. The internal security is given to the Guard of Palace exclusively, that maintains personnel of uniform and civilian in all the sectors
For that reason it is that the negotiations with the members of the secret service - that depend on the Department of the Treasure have been hard. The day in which the Americans inspected the security of the Currency, they even put the arms to the interior of both old tubes installed in the patio of the same name to verify that yes they were in disuse.

George W. Bush will be the only President who will not receive honors in the Seat of the Constitution; he will arrive in his car until the door of Palace and will enter the enclosure immediately. He will revistará only there to the guard swarm.

Last night, the security problem returned to appear in the supper made in the Mapocho Station. One of the guards of Bush tried to enter the Agent chief executive together, but the guards prevented it and was the own Chief of State visitor the one that was due to open passage to pushes to obtain its entrance, but making gestures of contrariedad before Lakes that hoped to take it it to the place that was assigned to him.

Pleasing Cardoen non

Civil employees of the Department of North American State prohibited the presence of the Chilean industralist Carlos Cardoen in activities conducted yesterday by the President of the United States, George W. Bush. Washington emitted an order of international capture against Cardoen in April of 1993. Nevertheless, it has extended that their lawyers are in conversations with the United States so that the industralist can be dealed with a cancer in some hospital of that country.

Consulted the lawyer of Cardoen, Juan Pablo Hermosilla, by the measurement adopted by the administration Bush in the context of meetings APEC in Santiago, said not to be to as much, “But he would not be strange to me in any case, since the subjects with North American justice are not resolute still”.

“No, I cannot comment that without knowing the details. It would have to know the measurement well and knowledge exactly which was its impact. The subject is delicate”, said to Juan Pablo Hermosilla before consultation of this newspaper

When indicating him to it if the Department of State has adopted this measurement in another occasion, it answered “not that I have knowledge. It has not been made before”.

When consulting him to it by the present state of the process between his defendant and the Government of EE.UU., it responded that contact a month ago was taken and “a new stage of approach began to look for a solution the case. And we hoped trusted that a solution is obtained. But he is premature to know if that will be obtained”. It stressed that “in this process of approach with the authorities we are going to have the news in a month more”. On if this it would be a extrajudicial agreement, answered that no, since it is allowed in the North American legal system. “It is normal and it leaves from the standard procedure to take contact with the authorities through the lawyers from the people accused of crimes and to possibly obtain an agreement”. The United States emitted an order of international halting against Cardoen by their implicancias in the illicit elaboration of pumps of cluster for Iraq, the Customs service of EE.UU even requires it by the use of used elements to manufacture that armament
