sexuality of historical figures #2: was Richard the Lionheart gay??
who really cares???

I was surprised when I first read this clai; it's so counter to the story of the man I was familiar with (Richard=the perfect warrior-hero; King John=the evil, linked with the Sheriff of Nottingham as the enemy of the good Robin Hood)...

(isn't Richard depicted as gay in the movie Lion in Winter??)

but if there can be lawsuits over Alexander (Alexander!?!?!!?)...

2. Later Phillip Augustus, think.
We have a really skewed view of homosexuality, partially based on Victorian society, and it's discontents. Also, the church used it against the Templars.

Some of the most effective military cultures in history had no bias against homosexual behavior.

7. Probably but not absolutely proven
Richard married late, it doesn't seem to have been much of a marriage, and he is recorded as having confessed a couple of times to sins against his wife and having asked for forgiveness. The records don't say what the sins were, but homosexuality is the likeliest guess.

The Anglo-Saxons used to claim that homosexuality was unknown in England until the Norman invaders brought it with them -- an implausible claim, but one which may suggest that the Norman nobility did have a certain reputation.
