The Great PYRAMID SCHEME in the SKY
I was talking to a gal in one of my classes today about her youth group. Her youth group pastor had started a contest to win by christmas. The class of 16 students are to see how many "saves" they can get under them by the 25th. They were awarded bonus points for youths brought in on a second tier down (new members recruited by them who have themselves recruited more people.) Thats a pretty cool scheme - sounds familiar to a scheme I wasted 100 bucks on when I was 19.

2. Now that is just fucked up on so many levels.
I really have a problem with the idea of churches trying to run themselves like a business celebrating salesmenship over all. So wrong. Another evangelical nightmare.

3. So a person's eternal destiny is a matter of luck
According to her pastor, a person's eternal destiny may be a matter of being lucky enough to be one of the "saves" of a member of the youth group.

4. Very "cultic" behavior!
It works though!

"Hi, you have a Divine and eternal problem and I have the only REAL solution for it!"

Even smart people can get taken by that on an emotional level if they don't understand how the meme works, and has worked, for centuries. Resisisting it or arguing with it can even make you a convert. It is factored into the pitch.

Words to the wise.

She still looks like a Thai bride discovering her paramour is an overweight redneck truck driver and not a corporate lawyer.

15. (Sc)Amway is a christian pyramid fraud scheme
Trust me, I grew up in Grand Rapids, I know all their tricks. My dad sold them janitor supplies for their factories and their hotel, because their products suck so badly.

The DeVoss family is big in the Michigan GOP-they owned John Engler, at least the part of him that the Bushes don't own (there's a lot to go around, he's a big guy). They've been pushing for a voucher system to send kids to christian school with tax money. They own two of four hospitals in GR-the other two are the catholic one and the osteopathic one. So there's no comprehensive women's health care in that community. They also built/operate the new children's hospital. They have this image of community service, but they built their empire on fraud, bilking people out of millions via Amway. "60 Minutes" did a story about their techniques a while ago-they showed a video of one of the recruiting lectures for potential Amway distributors, who are then encouraged to invest in becoming a distributor, when very few are successful. The recruiter was saying "God wants you to be rich, God wants you to sell Amway".

As far as conservative Grand Rapids people go, the Meijer family is much more respectable. They pay union wages to their employees, they are generous to charities, and they built the Meijer Gardens, which are worth visiting for the sculptures alone.

Getting close enough to fling holy oil on their heads?

16. creepy, fascinating stuff
which I've only become aware of since acquiring a multi-level-marketer mother-in-law. Brings a whole new definition of hell to family gatherings, what with the inevitable proseltyzing. I've also gradually become aware that Republicanism, religion and pyramid type business schemes are all connected. All three have cult like aspects. All three prey on certain kinds of people to buy into the b.s. All three express a putrid sanctimony while selling their snake oil. All three have an agenda of greed underlying a fake sugar coated exterior of supposed moral superiority.

(And for those who are looking for reasons to feel offended, I actually respect genuine spirituality, as opposed to self righteous, fundamentalist "christianity".)

Anyway, anyone else who finds this to be of morbid interest might want to check out this book (free online download)
http://www.merchantsofdeception.com/
an expose written by someone who rose up pretty far in the ranks of amway before it all fell apart.

A few choice bits:

• At one of these meetings, with thousands of distributors in attendance, Dexter (company founder) informed the audience that he had distributors in The Business in high levels in the government. He even told the group present that he had connections with Secret Service agents that worked in the White House. These agents had advised him that Hillary Clinton was a lesbian and that she slept in her own private bedroom — separate from Bill ’s.The agents, he said, had told him that our tax dollars were being used to shuttle Hillary’s lesbian lovers in and out of the White House.

• At this meeting, and many others,Democrats were often characterized as mindless idiots, bent on socialism and the destruction of the moral fabric of this country.

• The Diamond leadership became aware of the fact that the National Organization for Women had rented the very same facility for a national conference the next weekend. Once again, we were faced with the conflict of good vs.evil. Who would protect our families? God certainly would if enough of us would rise up. One of the leaders led somewhere near 2,000 of us in prayer against the National Organization for Women and its leadership.

• It was presented that perhaps the worst of these unions was the National Education Association (NEA).This allegedly was a group determined to subvert our family values and Christian beliefs,in general. It was another liberal group that reportedly used its clout to do many bad things.

• Distributors were also advised that teachers in this liberal system had free rein to teach our children homosexuality, sex education, and even Satanism, despite our wishes.

• Distributors were encouraged to do more than just vote;they were also to contribute financially to the campaigns of those conservative Republicans who were brought in to speak to us.It did not matter if they were not from our home state,as we were urged to get them in office in order to get the whole country right.
