1. My mom took out her McGovern button this year.
She insists it's why Kerry lost. Sorry guys.

4. I like Wallace
but had he been VP at Roosevelt's death, wouldn't one of his confidants, I believe it was Harry F. White who turned out to be a Soviet spy, been elevated to Secretary Of State?

6. I would even go as far as to say Lincoln after the war

I really feel that he would of gone to great lenghs to help rebuild the south as well as the country and gotten America past the war or at least healed the country a great bit.

8. Kerry would have made a cool president
Despite dealing with a GOP controlled everything. I was hoping to see him and Edwards sworn in. Bush needs to clean up his own mess I guess.

9. Kerry, Gore, Henry Clay, Lincoln 2nd term, Mario Cuomo
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 02:39 AM by liberalpragmatist
Actually, I don't know about Mario Cuomo. He and Gary Hart both had tons of potential - whether or not they would've made good presidents, who knows?

Lincoln in his second term of course.

Henry Clay - very pro-business, perhaps not a stereotypically Democratic choice, but I feel that had he been president, "the Great Compromiser," JUST might have been able to save the union and avoid the civil war. Maybe.

I do think the country is really going to suffer over the next four years for Kerry not being President - Kerry would make an excellent President.

Gore would have made a great president as well. My own belief is that he would have been judged well by history, although my own hunch is that he would have lost reelection this year to someone like Bill Frist.

Of course, we may yet see a President Kerry in or President Gore in 2009.

Certainly RFK should be on that list.

I'm less sure about McGovern - his principles were in the right place, but not only is there no conceivable scenario in which he could have won, I don't think he had the political savvy to be a good President.

I also think there are a few possible Presidents that may not have been "better" than the ones that we had - just similar. "President Charles Evans Hughes" (challenged Wilson) and "President Dewey" are the ones that come to mind. I like Wilson and Dewey as much as the next guy but I think Dewey would have been a good President and I'm not sure a Hughes presidency would have resulted in all that much being different.
