The Propaganda-Industry Complex and its role in the Right Wing.
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 05:56 AM by CoffeeAnnan
When Ike left his Presidency, he warned of the growing power of the Military-Industrial Complex and much of what he warned us about, sadly, has come to pass.A vested interest has been created in our economy with a vast constituency that needs to be fed its share of tax money to be appropriated for ever increasing esoteric weaponry for non existent threats.Reagan's Presidency made sure that beast would be fed well for several more decades.

The Right Wing found itself on the losing end when all its rationales for supply side economics hit a dead end when they met reality and deficits during the Reagan Era and the First Bush era reached sky high levels. To offset the image of failure, the Right Wing needed to create a new Perception Management strategy to restore its power, along with outright thievery of the elections to maintain its power. Hence came the Propaganda-Industry complex that now rivals the Military-Industry Complex in its importance.

Briefly, the Propaganda Industry complex is creating new mythologies of Right Wing magnificence of which the saga of George Bush II would suffice as an example. This nonentity, drug addict, alcoholic, incoherent bumbler and failure at everything he has touched, has been transformed to Churchillian heights and invested with powers that neither he nor anyone who has known him throughout his sorry life so far has suspected him to possess. A vast number of apologists and think tanks have sprung up well fed by Right Wing money sources to confirm his omniscience by endless repetition. With American mindset and worship of money being what it is, they are not very far off in assuming that George Bush's magnificence is now taken for granted by at least 50% of the voting population.

It is however the vested interest that has been created in sustaining this myth that will endure so long as it continues to be fed by Foundation money and the moneys corporations and individuals get by the tax cuts George Bush has so generously propelled towards them with his tax cuts.

One can say confidently that both the Military-Industrial Complex and the Propaganda-Industrial Complex will do their mighty best to add more wars to our agenda and create mythical men like Bush and, most likely, Arnold Schwarzenegger, to our collection of instant Right Wing heroes with no substance.

1. This was predicted in Elia Kazan's "A Face in the Crowd" where
Andy Griffith is a low class grifter who is turned into a media star who then in turn is used to a promote rightwing candidate due to his ability to control the minds of his audience. Griffith is the ultimate hypocrite as his audience thinks of him as a folksy, downhome kind of guy who's just a rascal at heart, but the salt of the earth. They don't know how he holds them in contempt and how power-hungry he is.

Big Lies: The Right-Wing Propaganda Machine and How It Distorts the Truth

FROM THE PUBLISHER
Joe Conason, whose investigation of the conservative witchhunt of Bill Clinton became a major national bestseller, takes on the most common arguments, myths, and fallacies propounded by the right -- and exposes them as the smear tactics they really are. A powerful rebuttal to books such as Bias or Slander, Big Lies is essential reading in an era of right-wing bullying and political conformity.
FROM THE CRITICS
USA Today
In 212 zippy pages, Conason, co-author of The Hunting of the President: The Ten Year Campaign to Destroy Bill and Hillary Clinton, does battle with conservative conventional wisdom with nary an apology. It's a book tailor-made for a group that has grown increasingly angry in recent years and has been lashing out in a variety of ways, including enthusiastic letter-writing campaigns to media outlets and a zesty variety of Weblogs. They're the folks who have decided they hate the reporting of Fox News Channel, conservative talk radio and all other manifestations of "the vast right-wing conspiracy." — Clara Frenk
