Is there a really wild generation in the making
I knew the stereotypical "bad girl" daughter of a local minister growing up...

As even mainstream churches have moved further right... esp on sexual morality ... are we gearing up for a huge number of "wild children" rebelling from the repression of their homes, churches and... due to the relright takeover of local school boards... schools?

3. I was going to reply that this kind of movement...
..takes years to develop, but we've been moving at hyper-warp speed (historically speaking) lately, so perhaps we'll see it soon. It is an inevitable reaction, in my opinion.

4. the rightward swing of even main-stream churches dates back
thirty years... think that we are a good stretch into the time needed for a reaction. Haven't seen it yet, but at the local U, were students have been conservative for years (in a red state)... many more dem votes than repub votes at the local and federal level. That is political, though... not the 'back lash' to which I initially referred in this post.

It just seems that moves to repress society - esp after there has been more freedom - never seem to succeed in the long run.

5. Probably so. These things do run in cycles.
Or to put it another way.

The pendulum will swing back.

6. Ya wonder how all those home-schooled kids (like Santorums') will end up?
Raised in such a narrow, one-dimensional social setting? I doubt they are even allowed to be friends with their neighbors' kids for fear of what they might see on the neighbors' TVs. Unless the Santorums moved into one of those neighborhoods where congregations of born-agains cluster.

What will probably occur is a split between those people who rebelled against their parents/authority figures to some varying degree as part of the maturation process, and those who remain docile children in their adult years. We have a lot of those now, don't we - who are incapable of critically evaluating whatever their pastor or Bush tell them.

7. Those people just move to cities.
While plenty of the kids grow up indoctrinated or become born again after a rebellion phase.

I dont think we will really see any major change.

9. Maybe we should begin using the word "Puritan"...
when we talk and write about what is going on in America today? It might cause some people to look at things from a different perspective --

14. Good point.
I went to a Christian college where there were lots of preacher's kids (including me). Some of them were quite wild. In fact, most people were surprised when they found out I was a preacher's kid because I was (and am) a pretty straight arrow. Fortunately, my parents never clamped down on me so hard that I ever felt the need to rebel. When parents have serious control issues over their kids, the kids will usually either rebel spectacularly or end up with big mental problems of their own.

15. It starts with the music...
Just watch music trends, that will tell you everything. If you are listening to anything termed underground, you are ahead of the curve.
There are some truly angry kids out there, pissed off at the admin.
I give it another war or two years, which ever comes first.

19. The repressive years
of the late 19th century gave way to the roaring 20s, and the rigidness of the 50s gave life to the sexual revolution. I can't wait for this next generation to grow up!
