My family-owned cable company sold to Rightwing Evangelicals
Our local cable company was family-owned until very recently. When there was a problem the owner answered the phone and sent someone out if necessary. The scrolling TV guide that runs on channel 2 used to play our local NPR affiliate in the background and had Grateful Dead Fridays.

Recently the family sold out to Bresnan Communications (from NY) and the TV guide plays Christian music and prayer all of the time. I have to mute it just to tolerate it!

Bresnan has given loads of money to the RNC and Republican candidates and PACs. They've even given to Tom DeLay! (http://www.opensecrets.org/indivs/search.asp?NumOfThou=0&txtName=Bresnan&txtState=NY&txtZip=&txtEmploy=&txtCand=&txt2004=Y&txt2002=Y&txt2000=Y&Order=N)

My family is Jewish. Why the HELL do we have to hear Christian music on our cable TV?

This country has gone crazy.

I am cancelling my cable today. If you have Bresnan, I suggest the same action. By the way. I live in a small, fairly liberal town in Colorado. My only other TV access choice is satellite.

7. I am switching to DISH. Their owners give to Dems!
I checked it out (http://www.opensecrets.org/indivs/search.asp?NumOfThou=0&txtName=Ergen&txtState=%28all+states%29&txtZip=&txtEmploy=&txtCand=&txt2004=Y&txt2002=Y&txt2000=Y&Order=N)

DISH is a subsidiary of EchoStar, which is owned by the Elgen family --who live here in Colorado.

In my research I found that they give to Dems and some Republicans who sit on committees that affect their business.

Bresnan, on the other hand, ONLY gives to rightwing crazies. I don't want them or their Christian crap music in my house. How would they like it if they had porn piped into their living rooms? I consider it to be an equal offense.

But I am not going quietly. I am going to write my local newspaper and Bresnan to let them know why we are dropping them. Then I will tell the DISH people why we are going back to them.

9. I Switched From Direct To Dish - Still Get The Direct Sales Calls!
After 2 years of telling all the telemarketers, "the man who owns your company is so evil, if you promotions was $10 a year for life I wouldn't get it!" They still call me constantly. I kind of like telling them that though.

When we first got Direct it wasn't Murdoch-owned -- we switched a couple of months after it was aquired.

4. Get DishTV
You can get the equipment and installation at no, or low cost. For $29/month you can get nearly one hundred channels with a one-year commitment. For another $10/month you can get Free Speech TV and nearly another 50 channels. The dish can be mounted to the top of your apartment building or balcony if that's OK with your super. Otherwise, see what they can do on your home.

8. DISH Is Great! Sirius Music Channels Also In My Package.
I think I get 120? My faves are the Sirius jazz stations, Free Speech, Link, BBC and this new one I found called CCTV -- it's like news from China but in French?? That one is wild, it is the first station under Sirius whatever number that is! Love the "Journal" news show on that channel. Lots of footage from Iraq, something we don't get here.

11. My Letter to EchoStar DISH Network
Edited on Wed Nov-24-04 01:13 PM by feistydem
Good Afternoon,

I thought it important to pass along to EchoStar and the DISH network why my family will be RETURNING as a DISH customer.

We left DISH because the price just felt too high. So we went with our local cable access company. But that family-owned company just sold out to Bresnan Communications.

Bresnan pipes in Christian Gospel music and prayer to play in the background of the TV guide station. Our family finds that to be offensive. We are Jewish and don't feel that it is right to have Christian music forced into our household.

What's more, Bresnan, we discovered has given enormous sums of money to the Republican party and to Tom DeLay and the like. Nothing has been given to Democrats or the DNC by Bresnan.

As Democrats and Jews we do not wish to support this kind of business.

We looked into EchoStar and found that the Ergen family has given to both parties. We can live with that.

You may or may not have any interest in this kind of information. But we at least wanted to let you know that in these devisive times in our country, we will seek to support businesses that do not choose political or religious sides.

12. What a coincidence
I have the same problem with the same company. I complained by phone on Monday and slipped a note under their door this morning. Until I saw your post, I thought it might be a mistake.
