The Warmongers Amongst Us.
By and large Americans are a peaceful people, who do not believe in oppressing other people and live by the rule live and let live. But we do have a faction, and a large faction at that, exemplified by the Bush-Rumsfeld-Cheney Axis of Evil that has a need for domination, plunder and hegemony.Their ravenous appetite is the cause of the current war.I wouldn't at all be surprised that they have systematically obliterated any domestic dissent and have created external threats to maintain and perpetuate their power. In essence, they have come to the conclusion war is good for their business and the American people need to be kept in the dark about real events.I do not expect to see any more honest elections being conducted in this country any more.

The American Republic founded by our our forefathers is gone.Welcome to the new old Plantation, U.S.A. We are all slaves now.

2. I disagree
Whenever there is a war conducted by the US(we have never been invaded) it is met by popular support.

3. The popularv support comes from the propaganda that we are
in danger either by Communism or Islamic Terrorism or what have you.The Manufacture of this Paranoia is the supreme achievement of our system.

7. I agree with you to disagree with the first post
Most Americans are bigoted and racist. They want to stay away from black people and keep gay people oppressed. They like war because they think Muslims are evil and deserve to die. I know this because people in my family think this way. I know people like to think this country is tolerant and loving, because a large percentage of people are, but the majority are bigots. This was proven with the last election with all the gay marriage inititives and the clean sweep of the hard right.

4. It was this way after JFK's death, MLK's death
Viet Nam. Sorrow. Confusion. Frustration.

This nation was not founded on Jerry falwell's idea of Pasty White Utopia.

This country came into being because people wanted to create a kinder, gentler government and because human beings - when their best speak up and are held up - will choose tolerance, liberty and peace.

Bush does not know God - as he claims- because he has no understanding of Mercy or Peace or Free Will. He will fall on his face because of his self-exultation. Happens every time. Merely read your history books.

8. Yes. Unfortunately, though,
they end up taking a lot of good people down with them.

6. Every day reminds me that we are really living in a fantasy world.
Just think of all the sci fi novels which built on the "1984" theme and you might think the USA has become what was portrayed as the evil future. Our current rulers have propagandized most of the population into believing that a 1000 year "war on terror" is a good thing while ignoring the fact that terrorism is one result of desperate living conditions suffered by most of this planet.

End of rant.

10. If we don't change it,it will follow us anywhere we go
Not that these assholes are that mighty, the world is smaller from the techno stuff that makes it easier for an old fart to kill people thousands of miles away and feel the pain and get blood on thier faces. The troops they send into battle think it is a computer game where you blow up the building from a distance and not here the screams. It isn't war anymore it's techno slaughter.

11. Read "The New Civil War"
from the DU editorials. It is part of the present Southern/fundamentalist mind-virus epidemic:

"With the South in command, get ready for enough wars to keep the VFW in business for generations. The regions diverge strongly on the use of violence. The Cavaliers and the Borderers brought with them an honor culture, in which duels and feuds were acceptable ways to avenge insults. Andrew Jackson, the first Scotch-Irish president, once killed a man in a duel. In New England, writes Fischer, "for more than three centuries, town schools have taught children not to use violence to solve their social problems." As Webb puts it, "There's an old saying in the mountain South. Insult a Yankee and he'll sue you. Insult a mountain boy and he'll kill you." As a result, the murder rate in the South is 7 per 100,000. In New England, it is 2.4.

The differences extend to war. Any military recruiter will tell you that the job is easiest in the South, toughest in New England. Our last three Texas presidents have gotten us into shooting wars, all vigorously opposed by Greater New England.

"(The South) strongly supported every American war no matter what it was about or who it was against," Fischer writes. "Southern ideas of honor and the warrior ethic combined to create regional war fevers of great intensity in 1798, 1812, 1846, 1861, 1898, 1941, 1950 and 1965." And, he could add, in 2003."
