We seem to have a pattern here. In times of crisis, we build fragile alliances with nations whose policies we disagree with. Once the crisis passes, we go back to our opposing sides, and sooner or later we have an enemy on our hands.

We worked with the Soviets in WWII. Within ten years, we were enemies.

We worked with Bin Laden in the 80s. Now he's attacked us, and is probably planning further attacks.

We worked with Saddam in the 80s. You see how that's worked out for us.

So who's next?

4. Musharaf would be the first I can think of. Saudis eventually.
We have so few allies nowadays, the game is not as much fun as I thought would be.

8. Iraq will now become the next Afghanistan
I fear the people there are very ticked about Abu Ghraib. I hope not, but I fear if we do just cut and run there, it will become a worse terrorist breeding ground than we could have imagined.

As far as our allies, I feel that they will not have as much animosity towards us after the Bush administration is gone unless his policies carry on, but I can't really see fiscally how that could happen.

An interesting read was the "American Conservative Magazine" sort of half hearted endorsement of Kerry, saying that the re-election of Bush could bring about the demise of modern conservatism. His policies could just bring about that end.

13. If civil war breaks out in Iraq - and it's entirely possible -
I can imagine an extremist regime coming to power (law and order, don't you know?) and giving us more trouble than Saddam ever dreamed of.

10. Convenientaniastan
But probably Pakistan. And if a military dictator who took over in a coup, were to be overthrown by Islamic militants linked to bin Laden, that'll just make life on this planet that much better.

17. Biggest threat comes from within
Just my two cents worth. All great empires collapse - not from outside pressures so much as inevitable corruption/powermongering from within.
