I've lived in a small county in the center of a Midwestern (clue: see icon) state. For years, it has been a bastion of the GOP - home of a particularly odious former governor. But that has changed.
Two of us began to inform the locals about what's really going on. We used, mostly, letters to the editor. We stated facts, and gave people info on how to verify them.
The paper printed some letters in opposition. These, mostly, made out points for us: that the opposite view was supported ONLY by morons.
And our County voted for . . . John Kerry. Not by much, and with split tickets for lotsa local GOP-ites. But, I'd like to think I changed a few minds. Cost to me: a few stamps.
The source of the info was DU, and other similar sites.
Now, I have a new project. In a local statehouse race, the GOP sent out fliers that contained, as the local paper printed ON THE FRONT PAGE, "lies." The now-elected Republican "denounced" them, and said "someone should be fired" for doing this terrible thing. Last election, his wife (term limited, that's why he ran - guess it's different if you are not Hillary) had exactly the same thing happen with her - she was really pissed, I am sure.
Anyhow, I'm gonna call this guy's office once a month, after he gets sworn in. And ask if that person's been fired. And make sure the answer gets put in the paper (Dems win either way).
So, I'm gonna keep up my letter writing, along with my friend. Maybe I'll recruit some others - how about you?
