Something struck me as more than slightly off about the Boston Herald story (which has now generated more than 300 responses from the home-page thread), and I wasn't sure what until I looked back at Roach's commentary from last Monday:

http://www.morganstanley.com/GEFdata/digests/20041115-mon.html

Yes, the word "Armageddon" is in there, but the probabilities of the different scenarios are all switched around.

I have a feeling one of the exclusively invited fund managers heard the word "Armageddon" just in time to look up from his sports page and invent whatever story he wanted to take away with him, and feed to the Herald reporter.

Yes, the twin deficits are awful and they threaten our well-being, but the money of mine that's not already hedged against a plunging dollar is betting that the story is sensationalized beyond proportion by the Boston Herald.

I look forward to (again) hearing Roach himself on the matter.

P.S. - as pointed out in another post, Roach gave the max to Kerry last year. So did PIMCO's Paul McCulley. Money guys aren't all ignorami.

1. The economy is not going to collapse but another...
recession is likely. (2006?) More job losses may occur too.

2. The eCONomy
is a giant CON game anyhow. Semantic gymnastics are everywhere. Confidence in the fiat monetary unit known as the U.S. dollar is what it has always been about. Too bad everything is so global now and the U.S. media cannot brainwash the entire world into maintaining "consumer confidence."

I am sure that well into the Great Depression of the 1930s, pundits were still calling it a "recession." And I am sure no one at the time ever said they were witnessing a "collapse." That was only allowed in history books written decades after the actual "extended period of stagnation" had occurred. Language and its manipulation is a very powerful weapon, as Orwell and others have pointed out.
