Patriot Act II - Not recieving 'southern' support
League of the South(?) Is not supporting the patriot act II, did not support the patriot act I, and has even went as far as to call shrub a liar, and a fake, anti-christian.. As well as a fake conservative. I know these guys are kinda radical in their beliefs, but it gives us insite into opportunity, and a reason to be hopefull!!

--------
we have a unique opportunity here;

Not only can we stop the patriot act II with southern support, I think we can also use this for elections in 2006- republicans prying into personal life and supporting 'big' government intrusion. I think we would have huge support doing this, especially in the south.

Newly elected senator Coburn (R) from Oklahoma even campaigned against the patriot act! Does anybody else agaree with me on this?

(partial) Article below is posted on the opening page of Dixienet.org (homepage of the League of the South)
----------------------------------

"USA Patriot Act II would make news gathering a crime
Think the first Patriot Act was a civil rights and personal privacy tragedy? Just wait until you see Patriot Act II. Section 102 of the police state bill would make it a crime to engage in any information gathering, meaning that people who gather news headlines on the Internet would suddenly be deemed criminals and terrorists.
Essentially, the law would destroy any last illusions of freedom in the United States. It would turn the USA into a communist-style police state, where no person is truly free.

1. You may have something there.

I heard Coburn and his challenger on a debate on C-span I think. I was only listening and didn't know the party of each participant. But when I heard Coburn speaking, I thought he was the DEM (Liberal). When I later heard he was the Republican, I thought that he certainly didn't sound like one. Maybe the repugs will rebel against their staunch, fair-minded, make-no-mistakes leader! We can hope, can't we?

6. You're right about coburn v carson debate
Coburn definately isin't a 'neo' conservative, If I had to classify him it would be 'paleo' conservative. I truely believe it is only a matter of time before the neocons and the paleo cons take the ax to each other.. without a common enemy (Kerry, democrat filibusters) They are not friendly.

Coburn's stances are more solidly social than anything here is where he stands:
----------------------

Abortion: Staunchly pro-life (made statement saying death-penalty should be used)

----

Government: Very strongly against 'big government' or 'spending', he even voted against funding for tornadoe victims in OKLA.

----

Immigration: once again, very, very, very strongly against.

where we can work with him:
------------------

Outsourcing: 100% against outsourcing of any kind

Patriot Act: He came out firmly against the patriot act and "doesn't care" if it hurt his reputation in his party. Publicly fuded with Dennis Hastert SEVERAL times while in the house

Envorionment: Its not clear where he stands, he is definately not 'pro-environment' but has said that he considers it 'important' to protect the environment for our grandchildren.

Social Security: called stock-market idea "crazy"

I think he comes down this way because he guienly cares about his stances and is not just looking for votes... how long he will stay that way is anybody's guess. He is however open to reason on some points.

3. There is definitely fertile soil here..
A ferocious streak of the right wing has been terrified of the government for so long that it's nearly reflexive. When it's clear to them that THIS government is ready to climb into their beds, scan their tax returns, and actually oil up those ol' black helicopters, they might be useful.

Also the Bush as Anti-Christ angle has potential.

4. It would have been nice if Kerry could play on this but he can't.
We need to find someone who can do it.
