On Wounded Knee, My Lai, and the Fallujah Massacre
Didn't sleep very well last night after reading this thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=1021154&mesg_id=1021154&page=

About "dead-checking", or executing injured Iraqis to eliminate any possible threat.

WTF have we become? What was/is our policy? Out of an estimated population of 50-60,000, how many died? Was every military-age male killed? Did we take any POWs at all? Was it a massacre that will go down in history like Wounded Knee or My Lai? These are questions that need answers.

As the ICRC says, the US has a "responsibility" to see that wounded Iraqis receive medical attention. Yet the policy in practice during our attack on Fallujah seems to be something between adherence to Geneva and dropping a nuke on the city: we'll do the best we can, given the circumstances.

Making Iraqis pay with their lives because we can't commit enough troops to evacuate POWs is sickening. The fact that at some level our military condones this kind of thing makes me embarrassed to be an American.

1. It's not about what we've become
It's the way we've always been.

3. Then we have to do better
There is no excuse. As the richest, most powerful nation in the world it's our responsibility to lead by example.

6. Just because we are good people, doesnt mean our government is good.
The fundemental error.

"I am a good person. I am an american. Americans are good people. America is good..... Why is America doing bad things?...I'm confused."

7. I am confused
and unfortunately I pay their salaries. I also pay for the M-16s, cluster bombs, and cruise missiles which are being misused to disastrous consequence.

Beyond elections or popularity contests there are fundamental moral principles which are not being addressed. I'm not implying that they are reconcilable, just trying to make a point how critical it is that we don't let them just sweep this under the rug.

yet, I don't know anyone that heard a peep of this from the US media.
Another report estimating 100,000 civilian deaths from the Iraq war http://www.voanews.com/english/2004-10-28-voa65.cfm was issued shortly before the election to mostly media silence.
Americans are being spared the truth. Many Americans don't want to be bothered and are not going to take it upon themselves to find out the truth.

I'd say if you are having a hard time sleeping, then you still have some humanity in tact!
