Is anyone else worried about what is going on in Ukraine?
Edited on Thu Nov-25-04 01:33 PM by Poiuyt
That has the potential to be a world wide disaster.

Ukraine has nuclear weapons and many natural resources, including our favorite, oil. We have already come out against the newly elected president, who is backed by Moscow. Putin has been putting the clamps down on Russia more and more. It looks like he is moving toward a more Soviet style of leadership. Given Bush's love of war, there seems to be the potential for an American-Russian conflict, based in Ukraine.

I can't believe that Colin Powell spoke so soon against the Ukrainian election. He should have waited until things settled down over there (aside from the irony of him criticizing someone else's elections based on exit polls and reports of fraud).

1. No, I think that the Ukrainians will sort themselves out
quickly. They're already talking about power sharing, etc. This just seems like an election fraud case where the guilty parties are all but caught red-handed.

2. Yes, it is worrisome.
On the news last night, a talking head declared this would likely lead towards civil war. And the US has enough enemies; I'd hate to think what adding the Soviet Union to that list might produce.

3. Cold War redux
with a sneaky little terrorism twist to it.

If we had diplomacy and our military intact we might have been able to secure those nukes. As it stands now all bets are off.

4. Possibly. I recall, the Russians were doing oil and trade deals with China
and not the US.

I am somewhat worried, but I won't really worry for now. What can I do? Or any of us?

5. POWELL IS AN IDIOT
And I'm glad he is leaving. I have more diplomacy in my little finger than he does in his whole body. Powell should be ashamed of himself.

6. Please read the article in Common Dreams
http://www.commondreams.org/news2004/1122-12.htm

Basically the election in the Ukraine is between a BushCo backed candidate and a Putin backed candidate. Both regimes want their hands on the Ukraine assets, with the Ukrainians being the loser in either case.

7. I agree...

You can't turn on the TV or read a paper without this being shoved down your throat. Why all the coverage on this? Why is the US media so willing to trump the fraudulent election charges? It worries me when all the mainstream media agree on something...
