One Thanksgiving Later in Baghdad

Last Thanksgiving, George Bush made a surprise visit to the Baghdad airport, and Fox News made it seem like this was the most courageous act since Daniel went into the lion's den.

But I doubt there will be any such stunt this year.

Baghdad Airport is closed, and Baghdad is an all-out war zone.

Now U.S. soldiers are dying at a rate of more than 100 a month, and more than 1,000 a month are being wounded.

1. I was wondering if he'd do this ... figured not, no need for the photo op.
It's not like he can be re-elected. Yet.

2. There is no way 3/4 of the states would vote for
a constitutional amendment to give Bush another term.

Zero chance.

3. And having "won" the election,

he no longer needs to engage in exploitative, disgusting photo-ops designed to make him look like the big, brave, heroic commander-in-chief who risked his life to bring holiday cheer to the soldiers who worship him. Also, if he stays at the Potemkin Ranch he can enjoy the company of his good friend Jack Daniels (and put to use whatever souvenirs he may have picked up during his recent trip to Colombia).

5. The King and Queen of Spain were there yesterday....
I imagine they were happy to leave, given what that pesky new prime minister did.... And good for him that he did!

7. I hear echoes of "Did I just spot Air Force One?"
Remember that bit of Clancy-imitation stupidity?

Somewhere in Texas, maybe a village idiot will choke on a wishbone.

9. The bitter truth is, it's too dangerous to go....
Baghdad airport is in the middle of a warzone, they may have been able to sneak him in last year as a surprise, but you can bet they were worried about someone sitting with an RPG near the airport this time.
