I finally watched "Supersize Me"
Whoa. Prior to watching the movie, I felt I was pretty informed about fast food. When I do get fast food (maybe once or twice a week), I don't ever order fries for myself anymore, I have them hold the mayo and cheese, I try to get the grilled chicken sandwich, etc.

But even I wasn't prepared for the nasty shit that eating fast food as it is traditionally served will do to you. Good grief, that poor man!

Powerful movie. The stuff about the meal services in school cafeteria was sobering, as our son just started kindergarten this year.

Everyone should have to watch this film.

1. For some insane reason, I watched it Wednesday night
Why I chose the day before Thanksgiving, I'll never know, but it was almost enough to make me swear off food altogether... :puke:

I haven't eaten fast food in a long time; since high school, I think. And I'm certainly not about to start now. :puke:

3. as for your son - SACK LUNCH!!!!
Edited on Sat Nov-27-04 10:49 PM by alittlelark
I have not, and will not let my children eat that swill. The other kids will be envious (if you do it right) and ask their parents to make lunch for them too.

11. Fortunately our son already knows that "fries are bad"
He really doesn't like fries all that much anymore. And at least on the occasion where we do stop at Mickey-D's, they have the apple slices instead of fries.

He's still desperately in love with processed chicken pieces though. If only these places would have grilled chicken breast strips or something.

9. Oh I know!
Ack! I never want to eat another McDonald's fry again!

I thought maybe it was because the fries, unlike the sandwiches, probably never got touched by a human hand. You know, the basket in the fryer to the scooping area to the fry container direct to the glass jar. But then I realized, well that serving of fries he got from a local vendor molded almost right away so maybe that wasn't it?

I dunno, whatever the reason, it was scary!

17. Avoid Subway.
The vegetables are teeming with pesticides. You think they get those from your holistic earth-friendly farms? Unfortunately, no. Let's not even get into the genetically-modified foodstuffs they take in.

The best thing to do is to support your local health food store. Buy stuff in advance, and prepare your meals in advance. Because, no matter which fast food place you choose--McDonalds or Subway--you end up less healthy than when you came in.

7. I watched it last month ...
Some people try to poo-poo it by saying that fast food isn't meant to be eaten all the time, but people honestly do live this way! My brother and sister-in-law were eating it twice a day until they both lost their jobs and can't afford it. And he smokes, too. Ugh.

Anyway, I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about nutrition and I was shocked by how bad that poor guy's health got. Dang! I had no idea. I would have thought that at the end of a month, you wouldn't feel all that great, but that would be about it. Maybe you'd have some vitamin deficiencies or something. But, heck! That was horrible. I felt bad for the guy for doing it!

8. I watched the movie a couple of weeks ago
and it reminded me of my last McDonald's food over 30 years ago. We'd been helping a friend shingle an addition on his house, and he'd gone out and gotten fast food for everybody. I did manage to snag a fish sandwich, ate maybe half a small bag of fries, and could feel the grease oozing out of every pore. Blech. I don't see how people can eat that stuff week in and week out.

These days I'll eat Oriental restaurant food, but I cook everything else at home.

I've always felt a little weird and out of step for not eating fast food, but honestly, when people eat it around me the smell of all that grease makes me queasy.

It's pretty foul stuff, all things considered.

12. Swore off fast food years ago.
And after reading Fast Food Nation, am pretty leery altogether of the food industry.

Unfortunately, I like the occassional meal out, so I try to be as picky as I can be in where I go.

Went to Subway for the first time, in oh, about 15 years or so, last weekend. I was a little freaked about going in, but the circumstances were such that I just quietly (well, semi-quietly!) acquiesced. The guys working there thought I was an idiot because I didn't know how the "system worked" in making your sandwich.

I've harassed one co-worker so badly he won't go near fast food at the office, except for Quizno's subs, else he'll get the Grand Inquisition from me. "Do you know where that food has been?"

13. I saw it last week
and forgot to put it back in the Blockbuster box! So I have a copy.
Wasn't it weird how his mood began to elevate after he ate once he was accustomed to the food?

I don't think I'll eat at MickieD's ever again.
Damn the fries are good though.

19. what amazes me is
whenever i tell people to go see the documentary, their first reaction is "well of COURSE you're going to gain weight if you eat at mcdonald's every day!" and then i explain to them that people do eat at mcd's or some other kind of fast food every single day, which the film maker brought up. what also got me was the changes in the serving sizes. i used to work in a fast food restaurant & am shocked at what i see there now in regards to serving sizes in the drinks. what they call "kiddie" (8 oz) used to be "small." what is now "small" was "medium," (12 oz) and on up to the current "large" which used to be the "jumbo" which is THIRTY TWO OUNCES!!!! and people look at me weird when i order the "kiddie" drink with no ice.....

21. It Horrible
I used to love it. I loved it so much I let it make me a 327lb man. Even worse 58% of that was fat. I turned on it all on Aug 30 and have lost 61lbs 35% of which is fat. Disgusting as that all sounds, it the cold reality of Fast Food. And I'm only 17! Just to think of all the greedy greasy money-gropers that put that shit out. Its absolutely disgusting. And to see Hardee's with that 'Monster' burger is just indicative of the problem. 1420 calories and 107 grams of fat that burger is. Disgusting.

22. Wow, congratulations to you!
As the movie showed, it is WAY too easy to load up on the cheap calories. Those super-size containers just boggled my mind. I think it was one of the DVD extras where he interviewed a guy that was just about to get gastric bypass surgery - this man was diabetic and had lots of health problems. Turns out he drank about 2 GALLONS of pop EVERY DAY. His wife was at his bedside and said she would buy about 50 2-liter bottles every 2 weeks. Holy crap.

Keep doing what you're doing - and be thankful you got sane about your food choices while you were still so young and able to come back!

23. Congratulations! It's not easy to give that stuff up.
The guy in the movie (can't remember his name) talked about being in a good mood and craving the fast food meals: all that fat can be addictive, in the real sense of the word.

Keep at it, man. You're doing great.

30. Thank You
It was so very hard at first, but being that I will be heading off to college next fall, I wanted to succeed. It (the weight) became way too much of a burden. The hard times are with my friends, when they are pumping thieir stomachs with that stuff. I always disliked the kid who would eat and eat and it never went anywhere. I figure after a while, it'll catch up with them.

After the movie, she went to get some McD's because she said she couldn't stop thinking about the fries as the movie was playing. I told her that the point was lost on her. She agreed. :)
