So where are they? 3 & a half years ago there was more action, IMHO. Spank me if I'm wrong here.

On the other hand, maybe numbers don't mean anyything.

1. Most of them are trying not to
murder their relatives over the family holiday. They'll be traveling tomorrow and back on Monday.

Holidays are always slow.

5. Hey, they shouldn't have argued with me!

But at least the food was good. I've been here awhile, figured I might as well start posting.

2. The numbers never get
adjusted when members are tombstoned or simply stop showing up. I expect that it's a tiny fraction of that who are active posters. I actually have two names, because I changed from the other one to SheilaT when I decided the old one didn't suit. I have a friend who registered several times, using different names, and never could keep track of his password and has never been an active member. I can personally think of any number of members I never see any more.

4. I counted about 47,000 active profiles
Edited on Sat Nov-27-04 11:46 PM by UdoKier
But I imagine more than half of them are 'dead' - people who came for a while, then were distracted by other shiny baubles.

Hard to guess how many real regular members there are, how many lurkers, but the mods must have a good idea from logins.

3. I just thought of something:
What if, what if, what if ... the du administrators sent out a call to protest to every single email address in their database? Tell each person at each email address to gather 10 people in their community, and meet, and converse about turning this country around.

Could be the beginning of quite a movement.

10. It is an idea that should be fostered.
Imagine just 4000 rabid DUers...combining forces.

We need RABID. We need FIERCE. We need some ACTION. Be sweet and gentile if it works for you, but I don't think what we are doing is working for anyone except the GOP.

17. Good Idea
The original old souls were more Democratic then some of the people that helped get them tombstoned. If they rejoined the funding would go way up and the brain storming would help 100%.

7. As a newbie, I can say....
It is a bit intimidating to post when one's post count is under 50 and most everyone else's is "over 1000"..... Yeah, it isn't hard to kick posts and rack up numbers but I don't want to be known as someone who never says anything more than "ITA! Kick!"....

Anyway, I imagine lots of us are just getting our feet wet sloooooowly

8. Many are probably like me
I left the country for several years doing various things like the Peace Corp and archaeological digs. So I joined, was active for a couple months and then was silent for several years and just got back in mid October. I should have a lot more posts to my credit but I guess they don't keep them very long. Then there are probably a lot of people who just like to surf and not really participate.

13. Thanks
Its been fun and fulfilling. I ended up in Budapest in the Peace Corp and have been doing digs in Jordan around Petra and on the Giza Plateau. Though I must admit this fall and winter has had me freezing my balls off after Jordan and Eygpt.

21. You're joking, right?
Trying to get a thread noticed around here is like trying to jump on a moving train...

I've never been on a board where threads dropped so fast.

22. It is staggering isn't it?
The constant flow of ideas and information. Of course crap does get through from time to time but how is that different than any other place? I fell in love with this board, in fact the whole site, from the moment I first logged on.

23. Me too
Particularly as my introduction to the world of internet forums (actually that should be "fora", but who wants to hear that shit) was video games boards filled with some of the dumbest, most hateful right-wing American teenagers you could ever pray not to meet.

But at least a thread stuck around for more than 60 seconds!

But also lots of good thinking, researching, vetting of ideas, developing of sound arguements....

Some of the smartest people I've ever "met" are here.

25. Neither have I
I'm sure I've left some conversations dropped, but I can't find my old threads. I only have so much internet time and this site is impossible for meaningful discourse (at least for me). I belong to smaller sites where I spend more time because conversations and ideas have more time to develop.

I'm sure as time goes on, I'll learn some tips and tricks to manage my time here and then I'll be more active.

26. Use "my posts" to find what you were talking about yesterday
and try some of the smaller forums and groups, esp. State forums.

Just my two cents! :D

27. GD and the Lounge are quite speedy
But there are other forums that don't move nearly as quickly -- especially the groups and state forums.

Welcome to DU!
