"...Reign of Witches..."
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 04:00 AM by Sannum
Elizabeth Edwards brought it to our attention, but I do not think that it can be posted enough. It is a quote from Thomas Jefferson after the Sedation Act was passed. I have it printed out and stuck on my fridge.

"A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt. If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake."

1. I think we ought to TRY a Reign of Witches.
Let the wise women run this country for a few generations. Let them work spells to end hunger, distribute wealth fairly and heal the Earth from the ravages of those who have preached for centuries that Witches are evil. We would undoubtedly be better off.

2. I agree, dbt.
We might be better off with a Wicca mentality as our leadership. As evocative the expressed thoughts of Thomas Jefferson appear, I would fear that the far-right fundies could turn his message against its real intent and implication.

They'd ironically and grossly use it as a reason to persecute those that disagree with them.

However, on that note, it seems our nation has endured tyrannical proceedings in the past, and has managed to overcome them. The message from Thomas Jefferson might offer for a warning, but also providing hope for us.
