The Past, The Present. Do you remember Allison, Jeff, Sandy, and Bill?
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 06:00 PM by DeepGreen
I have many heroes. In the present they're the Bev Harris', Michael Moore's, those that have fallen in an unjust war, their grieving families, those that protest for Democracy, those that protest for a better world.

In the past, I have heroes like Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer, William Shroeder, those the died in Vietnam or came home with injuries, those families that grieved and still grieve, the protestors, and again those that have continually fought for a better world.

Because we are headed down the path that we headed down 40 years ago, I have recently been finding myself giving thanks to those that fought for me. In particular Allison, Jeff, Sandy, and Bill. They died when I was 16. If it not for them, I may not be here. It is hard for me guess how many lives their courage saved.

God help us that this does not happen again !!
But I fear that the past is ready to repeat itself.

3. Four Dead in Ohio
That was the shocking title of a song about this incident by Neil Young.

It seems almost insignificant in terms of the kind of carnage we routinely see today.

If the past repeats itself, it'll be 400 or 4000 dead in Ohio, not 4.

I don't know much about Kent State. I was young. It would be nice if you posted more about it. (Of course it would also be nice if our history books and media would not essentially erase or dismiss the subject*)

History will repeat itself if the media, and that includes independent media and us here at DU*, don't educate and remind others more of what has occured in our past.

So thank you for educating me a little more and reminding me.

10. Stay away from hack James Michener's book about the incident...
he had a reactionary bone to pick with the victims (and all of the protesters)

15. James Mitchner wrote a book on Kent State
in 1971, I think...not too long after the shootings. I'm sure your local library has a copy of it.

None of these kids were the "troublemakers" Nixon and James Rhodes wanted the country to believe they were. Therein lies the tragedy, and therein lies the cautionary tale for these times. It can -- and probably will -- happen again.

I was eight when this happened, living in Ohio. I remember the widespread feeling that these kids "got what they deserved." We could not have been more wrong.

8. What's ahead of us will make Kent State look like a 'walk in the park'...
I forsee, in the next 2 to 5 years, a series of riots, not just protests. I think the neocons see it, too. Which is why they've set up those concentration camps all across the country, and have those new white train cars with the wrist and ankle shackles built in, that I've read about on DU several times.

In fact, I think the reason the media has been spewing news about Ukraine for the past week, is to infuriate Dems, who know good and damn well that our election was stolen the same way that the election in the Ukraine was stolen. They have to know that the fact that they are actually REPORTING the election in the Ukraine is making many of us madder 'n hell. They're trying to do that, I'm convinced. It makes for such an "outrage".

These guys didn't "get us" as bad as they wanted to during the Nixon era....and these are the VERY SAME CRIMINALS who are running our country NOW! They've been salivating over the "power" they would be able to show us, when we came back at them again.

They've been spoiling for that fight for too long. They RELISHED the Kent State Massacre, and they obviously desire a repeat, only much more horrible.

14. Tears and Fears
I have avoided this thread for a while. I knew what it was about and I wanted to simply avoid it.

In the end, I couldn't.

Fears and Tears. That's what it brought to me.

But also anger. For then and for now.

You're right. We're again close to this sort of thing.

God help us.

16. Thanks for joining in !
I lived about 70 miles from there.
I remember the day when we all felt like brothers/sisters
united for a common cause. We will need to get there again.
