CBC's The National: special 80 min broadcast (Bush visit)
This was truly a special broadcast tonight. Watch it online using the link:

http://www.cbc.ca/newscast.html

from the show's daily email:

Peter Mansbridge is in Windsor tonight to anchor the National as part of
our special inquiry into the visit of President George Bush to Canada.

It‚s called "Continental Divide?" It looks at what divides and units
Canadians and Americans.

In the news tonight:

Paul Hunter will look at how Canada is preparing for the Bush visit to
Ottawa and Halifax. From Washington, David Halton tells us about what
the American goals are for this visit.
Peter Mansbridge will then talk to David Halton and our Ottawa bureau
chief Keith Boag about what to expect.

David Common reports from a U.S. military base in Alaska that plays a
crucial role in the U.S. missile defense system˜Prime Minister Martin
and President Bush will discuss the U. S. desire to have Canada
participate.

Nick Spicer in Kiev has the latest in the Ukrainian election crisis
where the Supreme Court is considering what to do about the disputed
presidential election. And Don Murray has a story on how drums drive
the beat of the opposition protests.

Kas Roussy in Toronto has a report on a wild shootout on a Toronto
transit bus yesterday which left one man and an 11-year-old girl
seriously wounded.

In our special broadcast from the Windsor Art Gallery, we look at
Canadians and Americans moving back and forth across the border. Rex
Murphy recounts the history of cross-border migration and Don Ferguson
of the Royal Canadian Air Farce has his unique view of the story.
Peter talks to one family preparing to make the move, to Canadians who
have moved south and some who want to come back and he asks just how big
are the differences between Canadians and Americans.

Hope you can join us.

2. I watched
The undercurrent of intolerace and downright ignorant stupidity displayed by the Americans in the audience was shocking.

"We don't want gays here." "We are fighting in Iraq because Iraq attacked us on 9/11." "George Bush won the election overwhelmingly".

I am really beginning to think the indoctination into religio-corporate-fascist thinking that has been hammered home the last 12 years via talk radio, televangelists and the Moonie/Left Behind publishing cult has reached the tipping point and we are going over the cliff.

Canada is beginning to look like a real alternative right now...

edit: Sorry, I referred you to a different feature on the National...This one is a panel hosted by Mansbridge with Americans and Canadians at the Windsor - Detroit border discussing the current political climate in the U.S.A.
