Salon Finally Discovers "Our Leader" Billboards, Mentions DU

Cue the band and start marching?

"George W. Bush: Our Leader."

That message, stamped in looming letters alongside the president's smiling mug, currently graces several billboards in Orlando, Florida, along Interstate 4. Some images of the billboards were posted on Democratic Underground.com just before the Thanksgiving holiday, and have been making the rounds on the Web since. The billboards in question are controlled by media juggernaut Clear Channel Commuications, and also carry a tag saying that the contents are a "political public service message brought to you by Clear Channel Outdoor."

Raw Story's John Byrne reports that Clear Channel corporate spokesmen are brushing aside any responsibility for the billboards.

"In response to inquiries from Raw Story and the Associated Press, Clear Channel Outdoor issued a statement asserting that the billboard’s content was the product of the local office of the company, and not a corporate decision.

"'Clear Channel Outdoor markets are operated locally,' Tony Alwin, Senior Vice President, Creative for Clear Channel Outdoor, said. 'Local managers determine what copy to use when a location has time that is not sold to an advertiser.' Clear Channel Outdoor Orlando said they could not respond to requests for comment this week because their press person was 'away.' They referred calls to their San Antonio corporate parent, which did not return two messages for comment.

5. DU is the place to be!
What a bunch of jibberish coming out of the Clear Channel offices. Are they proud of their display or not? Do they believe in its message or not? Are they ashamed after having been outed as blatant propandists or what?

16. Installation art
Oh, I'd love to see one of these in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood (kind of like a junior varsity San Francisco). You could come back in a week and find Chimp's face pocked with generous samples of every kind of excretion ever produced by man or beast. It'd be worth an NEA grant by that time.

7. They were talking about this on the Ed Schultz show also...
Someone suggested they replace Bush's face with that of Alfred E. Neuman.

18. Schultz mentioned a new billboard, I forget in what state
I apologize, but I can't remember the exact wording but the gist of it was: don't question or second-guess, support our president and the troops! Schultz said he found that even more outrageous than the other one.

21. Ohio and Florida.
There were threads here on both; most recent included photos of AZ billboards by Clearchannel and Viacom, but they were different than the Florida ones.

14. I heard last night...
...that Wal-Mart's blaming "higher gas prices, which are discouraging families from driving."

Ah, that must be it. Perhaps if they sold gas at Wal-Mart, they could force all the refineries to move to China. And then, hooray, owners of mammoth Lincoln Terminators could fill their tanks for $5.

12. I saw a "congrats"sign for Congressman Todd Tiahart here in Wichita...
If I remember right at the bottom it was paid for by the Outdoor Advertising Association. Yeah sure...as in Clear Channel.

24. Just a general, unrelated question:
What does "mein fuhrer?" mean?

Not that it's related to this discussion at all....
