Nativity scene in our village park
The Catholic church has put this in the village park as long as I can remember. Until recently I never gave it a second thought. To each his own. Live and let live. It is not hurting anybody. And so on.

But recently they have had a poorly constructed sign in the church yard updated periodically reporting the number of abortions performed in The United States. The sign was finally removed.

The village has roughly seven churches in the village limits. The Catholic church is the only one I have seen where village police provide crossing guards at church events.

So anyway I am reaching the point where I do care that the Catholic Church puts their Nativity scene on Village property. Their very own tax exempt church grounds are nearly as large as the village park and certainly more visible to street and foot traffic.

I think they should put their Nativity Scene there.

1. Seems like they ought to
put it on their own grounds anyway....

I know a lot of people say we should leave this type of thing alone because people see it as a negative for liberals/progressives to stop people's "Christmas spirit" but I think it's bullshit for churches to be involved in politics and expect to be tax-exempt entities with special privileges.

I don't see the problem with them doing their displays on their own tax-free property....

2. Ah hell, let it go....It's Xmas.
But if you can't, just let Rev Fred Phelps know about it.

After he tells your city leaders that he demands equal consideration for one of his "Matthew Shepherd will burn in hell" monuments your park will never be cluttered with religious tributes again.

3. Oh I agree
Let it go. But as time goes by and religion becomes more and more aggressive there are many among us that will not let it go. I have heard local grumbling over tax exempt church properties.

4. It is the same
reason there are no Salvation Army Bell Ringers in our little village this year. People are fed up with twisted religious beliefs. I used to be a Bell Ringer. Never again.

5. Ask where you can put your heathen solstice display
or atheist God-is-imaginary-like-Santa display, or Scientologist Hubbard carved out of cheese display. Make it a straightforward, non-confrontational request.

If they turn you down, make them give you a written explanation. If you can't beat em, tweak em.

Let us know how it goes.

6. My village has done the same thing! I just posted a thread about it.
I am NOT happy about it and want some opinions on what I should do. There is a question (by me) of whether our village still owns the plot of land or if the Nazarene University owns it now. The University is buyong up all the land around the campus and this particular plot of land is directly across the street from the University. I want to complain about it, but need to find out who owns the land. Our village sign and Mayor sign is right behind the Creche. Inches away from it. :grr:
