She summarizes the glory that is the American enterprise in 2004 better than anyone.

6. I nominate Army Spc. Thomas Wilson
Army Spc. Thomas Wilson, for example, of the 278th Regimental Combat Team that is composed mainly of citizen soldiers of the Tennessee Army National Guard, asked Rumsfeld in a question-and-answer session why vehicle armor is still in short supply, nearly three years after the war in Iraq.

"Why do we soldiers have to dig through local landfills for pieces of scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass to uparmor our vehicles?" Wilson asked.

7. If heroism were honored it would make sense.
But when Bremer, Tenet and Franks win "Medals of Freedom" for what THEY did on behalf of the Iraq enterprise, it makes more sense to honor England for her role in the war this year.

9. I don't think they actually take votes.

10. My vote was for Rove
But there are just so many others out there that personify the current state of America, and England certainly is one of them.

She most certainly illustrates WHY WE FIGHT.

I'm reconsidering my choice.

13. Time's Man of The Year is NOT an award of Honor.
IT NOT GIVEN TO HONOR SOMEONE!!!!!!! It is a made to the biggest newsmaker, for good or evil, of the year. Some previous MOTYs have been Hitler & other dictators. Once an entire generation was the MOTY. And once computers were MOTY.

Sorry, but England has not been that big of a story.

16. Lynndie England stands for the state of America's image in the world
in 2004. I think she and Graner could share the title.

19. It doesn't matter what she stands for.
The MOTY is NOT about what you stand for. It is about how big a newmaker you are. And she just wasn't that big of a newsmaker.

22. Abu Ghraib was big news.
Edited on Sun Dec-19-04 02:03 PM by BurtWorm
It's a turning point in the way the world--in particular Iraqis--view American use of its power. Before Abu Ghraib, it was understood that, while the Americans were screw-ups in Iraq and that they were screwing with conventions of how long states can hold prisoners without explicit justification, the US was essentially a "civilized" nation. After Abu Ghraib, it has been understood that the US is in steep decline morally, if not politically, to the point where calling it "civilized" is a gross overestimation.

Silverhair, don't get your nose too bent out of shape over this. I don't give a shit who Time puts on their cover. Do you? ;)

18. Not a good idea. That would get the Freepers all hot and stuff
I have it on good authority that they're not used to seeing female breasts. Their brains can't handle it and they implode.

A little fun and games torture during a war zone however is ok. It's time to rub their faces in what they've done.
